PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION.
Improvements in or relating to Repeating Rifles.
We, B.S.A. GUNS LIMITED, a British company,
and GEORGE NORMAN, a British subject, both of Armoury Road, Small Heath,
Birmingham, do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows
:—
This invention relates to improvements in repeating rifles, and refers more
particularly to the kind wherein the opening and closing of the
breech mechanism is effected by an action slide mounted on the underside
of the gun barrel and provided with a handle or grip part for the manipulation
of same, and wherein the cartridges are fed from a magazine and moved into
the breech chamber by the breech bolt during its return or closing movement.
The invention has for its object to provide means whereby the action
slide is automatically locked when in its forward or outward position and
the hammer or striker pin of the firing mechanism has been moved to its
cocked or firing position; the said means being intended to prevent the
inadvertent opening of the breech mechanism after a cartridge has been loaded
into the breech chamber, either from the magazine or by hand.
The invention consists in the employment of a spring controlled catch
or lever which is mounted on the axis pin of the hammer or an independent
axis pin, and is adapted, when the hammer is in its, cocked or firing position
and the action slide is in its forward or outward position, to engage
with a notch or recess in the said action slide whereby it is held or locked
in such position.
The invention also consists in the provision of means whereby the hammer
or striker, when it is released and moves to its fired position, is adapted
to move the safety catch or lever clear of engagement with its notch in
the action slide, to permit of movement of the latter to effect the opening
and closing movement of the breech mechanism.
The invention further consists in the provision of means whereby the safety
catch or lever can be moved by hand, when the firing mechanism is in its
cocked position, to release same from engagement with the action slide,
to permit of movement of the latter to effect the opening of the breech
mechanism, when it is desired to remove a live cartridge from the breech
chamber of the gun.
According to one mode of carrying our invention into practice, we provide
a plate or lever which is pivotally mounted on the sleeve or bush of the
hammer axis pin, and is arranged to lie between the side of the said hammer
and the inner face of the breech body, the said plate or lever being upwardly
inclined and provide at its upper end with a nose part, the outer face
of which is radially disposed to the pivot centre of the said lever.
By means of a suitable spring the aforesaid lever or catch is normally
moved and held in an upward position, and in the underside of the action'
slide is formed a notch or recess which is so disposed that when the
said slide is in its forward or outward position, the said notch is in alignment
with the nose of the catch or lever, and under the action of its spring
the nose of the said lever is moved into engagement with the notch in the
action slide, whereby the latter is locked or prevented from being moved
until the catch has been released.
On the side of the hammer, on which the action slide catch or lever is mounted,
and located above the latter, is formed a rib or projection so disposed
and arranged that when the hammer is released for firing the gun the said
rib comes into contact with the catch or lever and moves its nose out of
engagement with the notch or recess in the action slide, thus permitting
of the movement of the latter to effect the opening and closing of the breech
mechanism and the cocking of the firing mechanism.
When the hammer is again moved by the action slide to its retracted position,
the rib or projection thereon is thus moved clear away from the upper side
of the catch or lever, and the latter, under the action of the spring, is
raised and its nose is brought into engagement with the notch or recess
in the action slide, thereby preventing movement of the latter until
the gun has again been fired.
The aforesaid safety catch or lever is also provided with a depending arm
or limb which is arranged to protrude through a hole or slot in the underside
of the breech body, its outer end being shaped and adapted so that it can
be readily moved by the shooter’s finger, in order to depress the
upper end of the said catch against the action of its spring, and withdraw
the nose of same from engagement with the notch in the action slide, to
permit of movement of the latter when it is desired to open the breech to
extract a live cartridge from the breech chamber.

COMPLETE SPECIFICATION.
Improvements in or relating to Repeating Rifles.
We, B.S.A. Gum LIMITED, a British company, and GEORGE NORMAN, a British
subject, both of Armoury Road, Small Heath, Birmingham, do hereby declare
the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed,
to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement
:—
This invention relates to improvements in repeating rifles of the kind wherein
the opening and closing of the breech mechanism is effected by an action
slide mounted on the underside of the gun barrel and provided with a handle
or grip for the manipulation of same, also with means whereby the action
slide automatically locked in its forward or outward position when the hammer
of the firing-mechanism has been moved by the action slide to its cocked
or firing position ; the said means being intended to prevent the inadvertent
opening of the breech mechanism after a cartridge has been moved into the
breech chamber.
It has been proposed in a repeating rifle comprising a movable magazine
slideable longitudinally along the underside of the barrel, and provided
with an extension in the form of an action slide which serves as a support
for the breech to provide a single locking member, mounted on the axis pin
of the hammer, which serves to lock the trigger, whilst loading the firearm
and also to lock the breech block in its closed position.
The present invention refers more particularly to repeating rifles of the
kind wherein a magazine of box type is detachably mounted on the underside
of the breech body, and a breech bolt, slideably mounted in a bolt-way is
actuated by an action slide mounted on the underside of the barrel.
According to the present invention we provide a simple locking device which
is adapted to automatically lock the action slide when in its forward or
outward position and the hammer has been moved to its cocked or firing position,
characterized by the employment of a spring actuated catch or lever mounted
on the bush or axis pin of the hammer, Or an independent axis pin, and located
between the one side of the hammer and the inner face of the breech body,
the said catch or lever being adapted, when the action slide is in its forward
or outward position to engage with a notch or recess in the underside thereof
whereby the said slide is held or locked in such position, and on the side
of the said hammer is formed a rib or projection which is adapted to engage
with the upper side of the said catch or lever when the hammer is released
and moves to its fired position whereby the nose part of the said catch
is moved from engagement with its notch or recess in the action slide, to
permit of the opening of the breech mechanism.
The aforesaid lever or catch is provided with a depending arm or limb arranged
to protrude through a slot in the underside of the breech body, to permit
of movement of same by hand when the firing mechanism is in its cocked position,
and it is desired to remove a live cartridge from the breech chamber of
the gun, or to open the gun without pulling the trigger.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which :—
Figure 1 shows in part sectional elevation the breech end of a repeating
rifle constructed in accordance with and embodying the features of this
invention, in which the action slide is locked in its forward or outward
position, and the hammer of the firing mechanism is in its cocked position
ready for firing.
Figure 2 is a similar view to that of Figure 1, but showing the hammer in
its fire position and the action slide unlocked to permit of the opening
of the breech 15 mechanism.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view . taken in line A—B of Figure
2.
Figure 4 shows an end and side elevation of the action slide catch or lever.
Figure 5 shows an end and side elevation of the hammer or
striker.
According to one mode of carrying our invention
into practice, as illustrated in the drawings, we provide a plate or lever
1 which is pivotally mounted on the sleeve or bush 2 of the hammer axis
pin 3, and is arranged to lie between the side of the hammer 4 and the inner
face of the breech body 5, the said plate or lever 1 being upwardly and
forwardly inclined and provided at its upper end with a nose part 6 the
outer face of which is radially disposed to the pivot centre of the said
lever. By means of a suitable spring 7, arranged to engage with the underside
of the forward part of the aforesaid lever or catch 1 it is normally
moved and held in an upward position, and in the underside of the action
slide 40 8 is formed a notch or recess 9 which is so disposed that when
the said slide is in its forward or outward position, the said notch is
in alignment with the nose part 6 of the catch or lever 1, and under the
action of its spring 7 the nose of the said lever is moved into engagement
with the notch or recess 9 in the action slide 8, as seen in Figure 1, whereby
the latter is locked or prevented from being moved until the said catch
has been released.
On the side of the hammer 4, on which the action slide catch or lever 1
is mounted, and located above the latter, is formed a rib or projection
10 so disposed and arranged that when the hammer 4 is released for firing
the gun the said rib 10 comes into contact with the upper side of the catch
or lever 1 and moves its nose part 6 out of engagement with the notch or
recess 9 in the action slide, as seen in Figure 2, thus permitting of the
movement of the action slide to effect the opening and closing of the breech
and the cocking of the firing mechanism.
When the hammer 4 is "again moved by the action slide 8 to its retracted position, the rib or projection 10 thereon is thus moved clear away from the upper side of the catch or lever 1, and the latter, under the action of the spring 7, is again raised and its nose part 6 is brought into engagement with the notch or recess 9 in the action slide 8, thereby preventing movement of the latter until the gun has again been fired.
The aforesaid safety catch or lever 1 is also
provided with a depending arm or limb 11 which is arranged to protrude through
a hole or slot 12 in the underside of the breech body 5, its outer end being
and adapted to be readily moved by the shooters finger, in order to depress
the upper end of the said catch against the action of its spring 7, and
withdraw the nose part 6 of same from engagement with the notch or recess
9, in the action slide 8, as seen in dotted lines in Figure 1, to permit
of movement of the said action slide when it is desired to open the breech
to extract a live cartridge from the breech chamber.
Having now particularly described and ascertained
the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed,
we declare that what we claim is :—
1. In repeating rifles of the kind herein described, means whereby the action
slide is automatically locked when in its forward or outward position and
100 the hammer is moved to its cocked or firing position, characterized
by the employment of a spring actuated catch or lever mounted on the bush
or axis pin of the hammer, or an independent axis pin, and located between
the one side of the hammer and the inner face of the breech body, the said
catch or lever being adapted when the action slide is in its forward or
outward position to engage with a notch or recess in the underside thereof
whereby the said slide is held or locked in such position.
2. In a repeating rifle having the features as claimed in Claim 1, means
whereby the safety catch or lever is released from engagement with the action
slide, comprising a rib or projection on the side of the hammer or striker
which is adapted to engage with the upper side of the said catch or lever
when the hammer is released and moves to its fired position, whereby the
nose part of the said catch is moved from engagement with its notch or recess
in the action slide substantially as described.
3. In a repeating rifle having the features as claimed in Claim 1, means
whereby the safety catch or lever can be moved by hand when the firing mechanism
is in its cocked position, to release same from its engagement with the
action slide to permit of the opening of the breech mechanism, said means
comprising a depending arm or limb which is arranged to protrude through
a slot in the underside of the breech body, and is adapted to be actuated
by the shooter's finger, substantially as described.
4. A repeating rifle provided with an action slide locking device constructed.
arranged and operating substantially as described with reference to the
accompanying drawing.
