This comprehensive and descriptive catalogue lists all those firearms held by the Museum of Applied Science of Victoria, Melbourne at the time the document was produced in 1949. The catalogue was originally compiled by Edgar Howard Penrose, the Municipal Surveyor and Engineer.

Most of the arms remain extant with what are now the Museums of Victoria, although some have been "presented or disposed of" in the intervening period. In fact many new exhibits have also been introduced since that time.

Today, the museum describes its arms collection as being "one of its oldest and most extensive collections. Comprising over 3600 items, it is the most important of its type in Australia, with sub-collections of international significance."

The catalogue covers everything from 18th. Century blunderbusses, and flintlock muskets, rifles and pistols, to the Martini-actioned rifles of the 19th. Century, and up to Webley pistols of the early 20th. Century. Many exhibits are products of the Birmingham Small Arms Company.
