The extract is taken from chapter 11 of Allen's book, published by the English Universities Press in 1953, covering those small arms then previously and contemporaneously in use by British and Commonwealth forces.

The section both details rifles that have been in service for some years, and some that were at the time newly under consideration for service use, such as the FN Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) and the Enfield designed EM-2 'bull-pup' rifle in .280-inch (7mm) calibre that was also under consideration as the new British service personal weapon before the 7.62mm NATO SLR rifle was selected in preference. There is also brief mention of the U.S. M1 Garand and the Russian Nagant.
