At the first motion of the finger lever, the firing pin is withdrawn and locked back. As the breech bolt is un locked and opened, a hook attached to the finger lever draws a cartridge positively from the mag azine into the carrier. As the gun is closed, the breech bolt pushes the cartridge into the chamber, the twin locking bolts rise into place and lock the bolt doubly to the receiver and last of all the safely locked firing pin is released. The magazine is filled while the gun is closed, through the spring cover at the side. Model 86 has a round nickel steel barrel; the length of barrel .33 caliber is 24 inches and that of the .45-70, 22 inches; forearm and stock are of selected walnut. The straight grip shotgun type stock has a rubber butt plate. Model 86 is made in Take Down style only, with half magazine holding four cartridges, which, with one in the chamber, places five shots at the command of the shooter. Its sight equipment consists of a sporting rear sight with sliding elevator and Lyman hunting front sight. The upper tang is drilled and tapped for attaching a peep sight. The .33 Winchester cartridge belongs in the high power smokeless class, has high velocity with flat trajectory and develops great striking energy and shocking power. It develops a muzzle velocity of 2,200 feet per second and muzzle energy of 2,150 foot pounds and is one of the most accurate cartridges of its type. It has a 200 grain full patch or soft point bullet. The .45-70 cartridge is a long time favorite with sportsmen who prefer ammunition of large caliber and heavy bullet. The following variations from standard rifles can be furnished at additional cost above the price of the standard model rifle. Rifle butt stock with metal butt plate. Full magazine. Checked stock and forearm. Pistol grip stock. Fancy walnut stock and forearm, oil or highly polished finish. The rifle can be shot as fast as the trigger can be operated. Lovers of sport find this rifle very desirable for shooting at moving targets and at moving game such as ducks, geese, and small animals. With cartridges loaded with hollow point bullets, this rifle, considering its caliber, is remarkably effective. As the ammu nition is greaseless, it may be conveniently carried loosely in the pocket without soiling the clothes. It is fitted with an adjustable open rear sight and a bead front sight having a bright alloyed tip that will not tarnish. The Model 03 is simple in construction and operation. After filling the magazine, the first car tridge is placed in the chamber by simply pushing back the operating sleeve at the front end of the forearm and allowing it to snap forward. Then all that is necessary to do to shoot the ten car tridges that the gun holds is to pull the trigger for each shot. The recoil from the exploded car tridge ejects the empty shell, cocks the hammer, and places a fresh cartridge in the chamber. A trigger lock is provided so that the rifle may be carried loaded and cocked, if desired. The Model 03 has a straight grip stock and forearm of selected walnut. The steel butt plate IS of the -rifle type. Pistol grip stocks, checked stocks and forearms and fancy walnut stocks and forearms, oil or highly polished finish can be furnished at additional cost over price of the stand ard gun. The Winchester Model 03 Automatic handles only the .22 Winchester Automatic and .22 Win chester Automatic Hollow Point cartridges loaded with smokeless powder and Winchester grease- less bullets. These cartridges are very effective and inexpensive. Their 45 grain bullets, muzzle per second and muzzle energy of 110 foot pounds place them at the top of the .22 caliber, rimfire class.
