Sir Lionel Fletcher, C.B.E., Chairman of the S.M.R.C., welcomed the revival of the annual match in its 21st year, and invited General Sir Alan Bourne, K.C.B., D.S.O., M.V.O., at one time Commandant The Royal Marines, to present the Trophy to the winning team and say a few words. General Bourne, after making the presentation to the Oxford captain, Mr. E. B. S. Alton, commended both teams on the good high level of scoring achieved and congratulated not only the winning team, but all who had shot in the match. He went on to aflSrm that 22 rifle shooting was the fundamental training for all shooting and for this reason personnel of the Royal Marines used .22 for training in shooting such weapons as 6-inch guns. A thorough pounding in shooting was important for national defence. He reminded his audience that the matter did not end with just shooting, but also provided a healthy recreation which led on to most friendly contacts with one's fellow men. Therefore, he exhorted them that wherever they went in life to endeavour, to maintain their active interest in shooting and to promote and encourage the formation of rifle clubs on attractive and comfortable ranges. Capt. J. L. Milne, in thanking General Bourne for his kind atten dance, deep interest, and inspiring words, recalled that precept had been put into practice by General Bourne when he had efiected the appointment of Sir Lionel Fletcher as Musketry OflBcer to the R.M., an appointment which had yielded excellent results by way of the men becoming much more confident and competent in the use of the rifle. After the Oxford captain had expressed the thanks of the teams to the London Transport R.C. officials for the use of their excellent ranges, and to the S.M.R.C. for effecting all arrangements for this match, the meeting ended with Oxford taking charge of the cup. A further sum of £100 has been invested in Savings Bonds making the total investment now £300. It has been possible during the year to procure sufficient spoons to provide for those won in the years 1943 and 1944 and spoons are now being issued to winners in e.\change for vouchers. Small-bore shooting in Northumberland shows a considerable revival and it is pleasing to note that the North umberland County S.B.R.A. League is again active. Mr. A, G. Stobbs, our esteemed Match Secretary for many years, has accepted the office of Hon. Secret^ to the County Association. As a result of the "ad^tional work involved, Mr. Stobbs has been obliged to resign his office of Match Secretary to the City of Newcastle R.C. The club committee has accepted Mr. Stobb's resignation with sincere regret and tender their grateful thanks for his services so freely given over a long period of years. Full-bore riflemen will note with pleasure that the National Rifle Association are to hold a rifle meeting at Bisley in July, at which H.M. The King's prize is to be competed for. It is hoped that the club will be well represented—especially in the final on 13th July. The annual meeting of the club was held in the County Hotel, Neville Street, on Friday, 22nd February, 1946, followed by a reunion diimer and presentation of prizes. Thanks are due to Mrs. Alice Armstrong for acting as hon. secretary and treasurer . * * * The London Transport R.C. at their commodious and comfortable .22 rifle and revolver range at Baker Street Station have accom modated 73,751 shooters dtiring the period. May, 1940, to October, 1944. On other of their ranges they accommodated 100,907 atten dances « « The Scottish R.A. are reviving their championship meeting at Dechmont this year—on 14th, 15th and 16th June. A special effort is being made to attract ex-members of the Home Guard. The competitions are all for individuals ; there are no team events. The programme will be issued and circulated as soon as possible. All information, entry forms and programmes may be obtained from : Lieut,-Colonel J. Tait Smith, O.B.E., secretary the Scottish R.A., 121, St, V incent Street, Glasgow , C.2. i WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UK72 N.R.A. Activities I N T E R - U N I V E R S I T Y R I F L E M A T C H . The Inter-University .303 fuil-bore rifle match, organised by the N.R.A., has been won by the Reading University Senior Training Corps team of eight with a score of 500 out of a possible 560 points. The course consisted of Application and Snapshooting at 200 yards and again at 300 yards—army targets. The winners made a very satisfactory score in the conditions. Next in order of merit was Aberdeen with 436 points. Following were Manchester, Liverpool, Cambridge A, London and Birmingham. The absence of Oxford from this interesting match is regretted, but, on the other hand, the entry of three teams from Cambridge University showed a welcome enthusiasm. Bristol had to withdraw owing to the ranges not being available. EAST AND WEST AFRICAN POLICE SHOOTING CUP, 1946. The N.R.A. has decided to revive this year the annual match for the East and West African Police Shooting Cup, which was dis continued after 1940 owing to the war. This trophy is competed for annually by teams representative of the police forces of the various British colonies, dependencies, and protectorates in East and West Africa. The match may be fired on any one day from 1st May to 31st December on any rifle range situated in the colony or protectorate entering a team. T H E L O R D R O B E R T S S H O O T I N G T R O P H Y . The Royal Grammar School J.T.C., Guildford, has won the Lord Roberts Trophy for rifle shooting in Great Britain in 1945 against teams from forty-five other boys' units. This award is made for mass efficiency in home units competing in the great Empire shooting match, conducted by the N.R.A., for the " King George V " Trophy in which teams, 3,000 strong, from each of the Dominions compete against a similar team from the Mother Country. Royal Grammar School had an average of just over 93 points a boy for 123 counted in the team. Tfie runners-up were Sedbergh School A.T.C. with an average of just over 91-j- for its team of 16. Third place is taken by St. Peter's School, Seaford, with an average for its team of 12 boys of just over 88 points. The highest possible is 100. Eleven units gain distinction for Mass Efficiency, that is for scoring an average of 75 points or over. There are 215 competitors qualified as Empire Marksmen and 186 as Empire First Class shots. With the approval of His Majesty the King awards are made by the N.R.A. to all indivi duals who make scores of outstanding merit. Nine silver medals have been awarded, all to boys of Royal Grammar School, Guildford, and eight bronze medals to members of other units. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The London general meeting of the National Rifle Association was held at the Royal United Service Institution, on 27th March, 1946. Sir Philip Richardson, the chairman, reported that the num ber of clubs affiliated had increased during the year from 1,190 to 1,230, this following a very big increase in 1944. The holding of a prize meeting this year, starting on 1st July, was possible, he said, only because of the splendid help offered by the War Office and Royal Marines. The financial statement of the N.R.A. for 1945 shows a deficiency on the revenue account of £2,564, compared with a deficiency of £990 in 1944. The property of the association stands at £70,579. There are now 1,730 life members and 815 annual memtjers. BISLEY MEETING, 1946. The 77th annual prize meeting of the National Rifle Association, as already announced, will start on 1st July and will last just over a fortnight. The first week will be devoted to shooting under service conditions except that there will be some match rifle shooting at the end of that week and the Ashburton match will be on Thursday, 4th July. Grand aggregate events will start on Monday, 8th July, and will end with the final stage of the King's Prize on Saturday afternoon, 13th July. The 900 yards shoot for the Duke of Cambridge Prize will begin in the first period on Monday. On Tuesday the Alexandra at 600 yards will start the day, to be followed by the St. George's Vase and the shoot for the Daily Telegraph and Morning Post Cup. The first stage of the King's Prize will be on Wednesday, when there will also be the Corporation of the City of London at 1,000 yards. On Thursday are the Duke of Gloucester's prize, the Donegall, and the Conan Doyle. Friday will see the second stage of the King's and the Daily Mail Jubilee prize of £50 for those who have entered for the King's but who have not passed into the second stage. There will be no extra entrance fee for this new competition. Saturday will begin with the second stage of the St. George's and finish with the K i n g ' s fi n a l . The big matches will come after the meeting proper. On Sunday morning, 14th July, there will be the Inter-Services XX match and the next day the long range matches for the Mackinnon and Barnett cups, and in the morning the National, Kolapore, and Junior Kolapore matches. Sighting shots will be allowed before the usual individual com petitions and all shooting will be for honour, with an entrance fee of 3s. and a concurrent sweepstake at the cost of 8s. for those who wish t o s h o o t f o r m o n e y. CHEAPER SHOOTING. Much cheaper shooting for members of its affiliated clubs is now assured by the N.R.A., which is prepared to supply them with Mk. VII .303 ammunition at the rate of £2 10s. a box of 1,248 rounds. This will be carriage paid and the price works out at less than a half penny a round. The much vaunted cheap cartridges we used in the interval between the two wars usually cost just over a penny a round. Since the large number of Home Guard units started to form them selves into rifle clubs a year ago, the N.R.A. has had many complaints about the difficulty of obtaining full-bore cartridges of any kind, let alone cheap ones. This difficulty has been removed now, for the N.R.A. seems to have any amount of " ammo." to sell, for it asks club secretaries to try to order a year's supply in bulk. Not less than a ffill box can be sold. The N.R.A. has also acquired a large number of No. 3 (P. '14) rifles. This rifle acquired a good reputation for accuracy in the pre-war period and was used by our snipers during the war. These rifles will be let on hire to individuals or clubs. The association had also adopted a very inexpensive aperture back-sight, which would be available through all reputable dealers at about 26s. 6d., and would be on hire for a.few shillings a year with N.R.A. rifles. Full particulars about ammunition and rifles can be obtained by application to the Secretary, N.R.A., at Bisley Camp. PIST OL SHOOTING. The Pistol and Revolver matches (.22 inch calibre) organised by the N.R.A. are increasing steadily in popularity and the standard of accuracy is going up. In the sixth session (July to December, 1945) J. G. Knott, of the Ham and Petersham Club, won the Tiger Challenge Trophy with the fine score of 151 out of 160. Next is C.S.M. W. Meaker, of Bicester Garrison Club, with 148 ; followed by E. L. Urton, of Ashgate, 142 ; W-Cdr. J. K. Gallie (N.R.A.) and G. W. Cafierata, 138; and J. F. Chandler, of Twickenham, 137. The first annual dinner of the Elgee R.C. was held at the Park Royal Hotel, Hanger Hill, on 28th March. Nearly 100 members and guests were present. In proposing the toast of the club, the president, Mr. Ernest Whitby, referred to the great improvement in shooting during the two and a half years since the club was formed and to the satisfactory way in which its activities were being maintained. Responding to the toast of the guests, Mr. George Pethard, M.B.E., for the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs, Mr. J. Wright, chairman of the Middlesex Small-bore R.A., and Mr. L. S. Hughes, British Small bore champion (county secretary), congratulated the club on its two successes in the S.M.R.C. 1945 League competitions and wished it every success in the coming year. Mrs. Wright, wife of the chairman of the Middlesex County Association, presented the prizes, amongst which were the medals won by the A team for second place in Division 35 of the S.M.R.C. 1944-5 Winter League, and the C team for first place in Division 57 of the S.M.R.C. 1945 Summer League competi tions. A happy circumstance was that Mrs. Alice Bates shot her first highest possible score (100) in time to be presented with the cup for the first ady in the club to do this. * * A 20-a-side all to count postal match was shot in January between Hamiltons v. Winnipeg R.A. The match was won by Hamiltons, the scores being : Hamiltons 3,897, Winnipeg (Canada), 3,765, Hamiltons winning by 132 points. A return match will be shot during April under the same conditions, and in June a 12-a-side 10 to count match is being arranged between the two clubs over the Dewar Match course. These matches have aroused keen interest in Winnipeg, Canada, so much so that the Secretary of the Winnipeg Club wishes to contact any club in Great Britain to arrange similar matches. Any club interested, please write Mr. G. W. Finnsson, Secretary, Winnipeg Civilian Rifle Association, 505, Beverley Street, Winnipeg, Canada. WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UKSpring, 1946. iii. A.C.F. Miniature Rifle Competition H O M E C O U N T I E S F I N A L This competition was held at the L.P.T.B., Baker Street Range on Saturday, I9th January, 1946, between Cadets representing the six Counties administered by H.Q., London District. The winners of the competition were the County of London with a total score of 755, closely followed by County of Surrey, who scored 738. In the absence of the G.O.C., London District, Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Loyd, K.C.B., D.S.O., Colonel H. L. Graham, M.C., General Staff London District, congratulated the winners and all the teams taking part on their excellent shooting, and before presenting the winners with silver spoons (given by the S.M.R.C.), Col. Graham expressed appreciation and thanks to the L.P.T.B. for the use of the range and the S.M.R.C. for their kindness in giving the prizes and to Mr. Pethard for his help and assistance in running the competition. In reply, Mr. Pethard, M.B.E., Secretary S.M.R.C.. thanked Colonel Graham and said that in view of the Society's desire to encourage the practice of .22 shooting by cadets and the close scoring between the winners and the runners-up there would be no diffi culty in supplying prizes for both these teams repre senting the Counties of London and Surrey. Bronze medals were sent to the Surrey team as the runners-up. Details of the scores are given in summary form below :— T H E W I N N I N G L O N D O N T E A M O N T H E R A N G E . Miniature Rifle Championship An increase in the number of entries and an improvement in the standard of shooting marked this year's competition for the Country LifeVuhWc Schools J.T.C. Miniature Rifle Championship. Sixty-seven teams competed in Class A, and 51 teams in Class B, compared with 60 and 42 respectively in 1945. The standard of more than 60 per cent of the competitiors in both classes was well above the level of previous years. S e v e n t e e n s c h o o l s e n t e r e d t w o t e a m s . I n C l a s s A t h e s c h o o l s which last year led the field again take the first three places, although winners and runners-up have reversed the order of 1945. For the fourth year in succession the Royal Grammar Sojiool, Guildford, and Marlborough College have fought out the championship, the former displacing the latter by a narrow margin and scoring their third win in four year—a highly meritorious performance in that they have either led all their opponents or been bracketed first in every scries. They also improved on their last year's high aggregate by 34 points. Marlborough, eight points only behind the leaders, tied with them in Series 1 (grouping) and 3 (snap), while Taunton School, some distance behind, made none the less very good shooting in the first three series to run into third place. In Qass B, Trinity College, Glenalmond, achieved their third successive win with an 18 point impro\ement on last year's score. They were markedly superior to all but one of their rivals on the landscape target and in the grouping and rapid practice. King's School, Worcester, greatly improved on a lowly position last year, and finished well in front of Gresham's School, who in their turn improved their 1945 position and score. In Class A the 20 leading teams averaged 15 points more than those in corresponding sequence last year. In Class B the standard of the first dozen teams was approximately 12 to 14 points higher. In Class A, only the winner and runners-up made highest possibles in Series 1, biit 13 teams scored 65 or over. The leading four teams all made possibles in Series 3, a creditable achievement, although the target was slightly larger than last year. Eighteen competitors made individual possibles of 85 in the aggregate of Series 1, 2 and 3, also a marked improvement on last year, when only three did so. The best second team, as in 1945, was Marlborough College. Wrekm College made some first-rate shooting in Series 2 (rapid) and 3, to tie with the winners, and only a loss of form in the grouping and landscape target practices deprived them of higher honours than fourth place. In Class B, four competitors put on individual possibles in the aggregate of Series 1, 2 and 3, and seven made 50 on the rapid practice. Eight tearns scored 65 to 75 in Series 1, an improvement which was also sustained in Series 3 and (slightly) in the landscape target. The landscape target, with no such sharply defined features as the tanks, guns and troops of recent years, was perhaps more difficult than usual, and scores were generally a little lower. No. 1 objective, the cart on the left, and No. 4, by the landing stage, seem to have proved the hardest targets to pick up. Nos. 2 and 3, on the line of the bridge parapet, produced some good grouping (nine scores of 48 in all) and were evidently easier of recognition. To sum up, in both classes the team shooting generally in Series 1 was above the 1945 level; in Class A in Series 2 twenty-nine com- petitors made possibles of 50. In this practice, too, the hardest of the lot in view of the single loading and dexterity essential to getting off 10 shots in 60 seconds, nine teams made scores of 380 to 394 as compared with 378 to 388 last year. In Series 3 the improve ment generally was very marked, and only on the landscape target was there a slight deterioration. The Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs PROCEEDINGS AT THE FORTY-THIRD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY HELD IN THE WRITING ROOM OF THE ROYAL UNITED SERVICE INSTITUTION, WHITEHALL, LONDON, S.W., ON WEDNESDAY, 22nd MAY, 1946. LT.-COL. SIR LIONEL FLETCHER, C.B.E. (Chairman of the Council) PRESIDED. After formal business, The Chairman said;—As this is the first General Meeting since the loss of our late President, Lt.-General Sir Alfred Codrington, I think we would all like to show our respect by standing in silence for two minutes. CThe Meeting then stood in silence.) I think it well to remind you that it is undoubtedly due to his connection with rifle shooting and his thorough knowledge ot rine shooting among the clubs, as not only those who met him, but also those who knew of him are aware, that riflemen and clubs nave exercised such patience and tolerance in these difficult war years.
