The ^al has to be shot not later than 7th April, under the supervision of a witness appointed by the S.M.R.C. East Bristol R.C., formed 12 months ago with the object of fostering the friendship which had grown out of the Home Guard, and furthering the art of small-bore shooting, is now firmly established and attracting new members. Every encouragement is given by our presi dent, Lt.-Col. W. M. Martin, O.B.E., who has presented us with a very handsome cup to be shot for annually, and able support is given by our Vice-Presidents. The members include such well-known people as " Wilf " Wildgoose (who now shoots without his bowler hat), ^d " Ray " Edwards (who is Glos. small-bore champion) and " Bob Upward, who has had many individual successes. Considerable help has been given by the Gloucestershire Territorial Association, from whom we loan an excellent indoor range of most up-to-date design We have recently introduced fluorescent lighting to this range and the results have shown that the exj^nse w^ justified. A marked improvement in the standard of shooting, which has reached a very high level, has resulted in many local successes for our thr^ teams in shoulder-to-shoulder matches. Our, activities include .22 and .303 shooting and we are negotiating for an open range tor tne coming season, which means that the club will be in a position to participate in S.M.R.C. open-air competitions, and we are lookmg forward to a most successful season. Salter, having to resign that position owing to continued ill-hcSlth. The energy and drive with which she has helpetl to found the Association will not be entirely missed, however, as she has been elected a member of the Council and will continue as the W.R.A. representative on the S.M.R.C.'s Council. Until a new secretary is appointed Mr. J. C. Salter, an executive vice-president and stats, officer of the Association, will take over as acting hon. secr^tar^e gccr^i meeting, held at Gas Industry House, Hyde Park Corner, on 16th March, Mrs. Salter and Mrs. N. Wilson, of Heston and Hounslow, were elected to the Council. Si.\ty-four new clubs were welcomed, most having affiliated under the automatic agreement with the S.M.R.C., and we advise ladies' clubs and sections who have not yet affiliated to us that they can do so free of cost if they have seven or more lady members. Only advice to the acting hon. secretary, S. C. Salter, 97, Caithness Road, Mitcham, Surrey, is "'^'"Entrance forms for the team championship have already been circulated and the closing date is 1 Ith April. Jt may be possible to accept late entries up to a week later. We look forward to a' very keen competition for the championship this year with some of the new affiliations adding to the scoring power, and we hope soon to be able to proclaim the first women's team possible. Details of the individual competitions will be sent out in the near future. The competitions will be graded into four sections as before, but will follow the News of the World competitions this year with qualilVing scores to the next stage. Grading will be done on averages certified by club secretaries. In reply to the demand for a metal brooch type badge for the W.R.A. a design has been approved—gold crossed rifles on a crimson background with a white surround. We hope to have supplies ready by late May at 4s. each. H O Y L A K E A N D W E S T K I R B Y W. H . D . R . C . (Team Champions—1945.) left to right (stand/ng) Miss B. Dickson ; Miss G. Home Guard Team Competition, 1946 for the Kent-Phillips Challenge Cup Last year, tlic fourth of the annual S.M.R.C. Home Guard Com petitions, we had a terrifie slump in entries due to the " stand down." They dropped from 2,469 teams in 1944 to 226 in 1945. Since then many Home Guard units still interested in rifle shooting have formed rifle clubs and many others have joined established civilian rifle clubs so that they may be able to continue this interesting sport. To foster and maintain this interest we were given the Kent-Phillips Challenge Cup c.xpressly for Home Guard teams and we have just completed the first competition for this handsome trophy. We received the quite good entry of 418 teams for the competition, which was a decided improvement upon that of the previous year. As more and better equipment becomes available we hope to receive m o r e e n t r i e s a n d s h o o t i n g w i l l i m p r o v e . T h e s c o r e s o f t h e l e a d i n g 26 teams in the first stage ranged from 959 to 980 where last season qualifying scores were 948 to 985. The scores this year were better amongst the lowest teams of the leading 25, but they were a little lower in the highest teams. Competitors had an advantage last year as they were allowed to use rests, but such aid was not permitted t h i s s e a s o n . The trophy has been won by Wick H.G. with a score or976. This is the same team who won this competition last year and who were then shooting under their service title of 3 Plat. A Coy., 1st Caithness Bn. The personnel of the team is the same with one exception. Their score in the first stage was 966 so they improved on that by 10 points in the final stage. Their winning score last season was 984. City of Cardiff were second with 975 and this improved on their first stage by eight points. Croydon and Leeds were equal third with 971 each. The former added six points to their first attempt and the latter 11 points. A comparison of the scores made by the 26 teams in the first and second stages will show that whilst 14 teams improved their scores in the final, 12 did not do so well. And in comparing the finalists with last year it will be noted that whilst the leading eight were a few points below the standard of last season, thereafter the tendency was in fiivour of this year's finalists.
