For seven years he was a member of the Vauxhall R.C., Luton, and in 1942 he joined the Springfield Works R.C., Nottingham. He won his Master-shot Badge in 1936 and awards for the following: Beds. County, Anglo-American Pershing Medal 1938-9, Cheshunt R. League medal, all the Newspaper and C. R. E. Bell awards, together with a number of others. He was one of the Old Contemptibles, having served in France, 1914-18, with the 2nd Battn. Sherwood Foresters, and had seven years' service to his credit. We sympathise with his wife and son in their great loss. Another friend of the Society in the early days has passed on in the person of the late David Briggs of Brigg, Lincolnshire. Mr. Charles Laywood. M.B.E., writes :— " I have looked up my old records and I find our late friend David Briggs, was on the Executive Committee of the Lincoln shire Association from the date of its inception in 1907 until March, 1911^ when he did not seek re-election on the Committee. Brigg R.C. was formed in 1903. The secretary to 1910 was D. Briggs, Branshire, Brigg. I don't know whether this was David or his father. In 1910 E. W. Lightwood was appointed secretary. Our sympathy and those of their many friends in the S.M.R.C., and especially in the County of Sussex, will go out to Mr. and Mrs. Edyvean Walker of Bognor Regis, who have to bear the heartbreak of the loss of their only son, Peter, who was killed in a flying accident on the 17th November. Like so many other fine lads they feel he has given his life for the Country, but it is terribly hard for the parents to bear such a tragic loss. The sudden death, through a virulent germ, of Mr. Thomas F. Strachan of 30, Helton Place, Aberdeen, on 13th November, has come to his many friends throughout the S.M.R.C. with unbelievable effect and with a tragic sense of shock. For the past fifteen years he was secretary of Portlethen Small-bore R.C., and one of its leading shots. Mr. Strachan served in the last war and joined the Home Guard at its formation in 1940. He was a Platoon Sergeant in C Coy., 4th (City of Aberdeen) Battalion. Mr. Strachan, who was forty-eight, leaves a widow and daughter. He was a son of Mr. T. F. Strachan, former Deputy Chief Constable of Aberdeen and Mrs. Strachan, Rocklands Cottage, Cults. Accompanied by his wife and daughter, he was-an unfailing attendant at the S.M.R.C. Scottish Meetings for many years and we shall all feel the gathering will not be the same again without him. His wife's mother had died suddenly on 16th October, and this must have added to his depression and lessened his resistance to ill effects. So full of life, enthusiasm and quiet humour as he was, whilst feeling deeply his loss ourselves, our thoughts naturally turn to his wife and daughter with profound sense of sympathy in their irreparable loss. Admiral of the Fleet Sir Dudley Pound, G.C.B., O.M., G.C.V.O., First Sea Lord of the Admiralty and Chief of the Naval Staff from June, 1939, until early in October, 1943, died on 21st October. He was one of the most capable officers of his time. As a captain during the war of 1914-18 his service was divided between Grand Fleet battleships and staff work at the Admiralty. Promoted to Flag rank in 1925, he was employed almost continuously thereafter, serving as Com mander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet for over three years. He became Chief of the Naval Staff in June, 1939, in succession to Admiral Sir Roger Backhouse, and held that position until early in October, when a breakdown in health compelled him to relinquish it. No other Service Chief of Staff has held office continuously in time of war for so long a period. That he deserved outstandingly well of his genera tion was recognised by his appointment to the Order of Merit on 3rd September, 1943, the fourth anniversary of the outbreak of war. He was made K.C.B. in 1933, G.C.V.O. in 1937, and G.C.B. in 1939, in which year he was promoted Admiral of the Fleet ; he held the medal of the Royal Humane Society. On lOlh March, 1942, he became a Vice-President of the S.M.R.C. In thanking the President and Council of the Society for their invitation he added : " I am very gratified to receive this request, and I am delighted to accept. 1 fully realise the value of Miniature Rifle Clubs, and I hope that the success of the Society in the last 40 years will be continued in the future." Like innumerable others in the British Em Dire we could ill afford the loss of such a good and influential frienc. Lieut. Amos Stuart Mullins, D.S.C., Royal Naval Reserve, was born at Isleworth on the 5th September, 1912, and on leaving school selected the Merchant Na\'y as a career, which he left with the rank of 2nd Officer on joining the Metropolitan Police in March, 1933, where after finishing his training he was posted to J Division and stationed at Hackney. It was at this station that he first took up small-bore shooting. In June, 1934, he was transferred to the Special Branch at the Commissioner's Office. After a short spell there he was posted to Newhaven port as a Special Branch Officer, and while there shot for the Newhaven R.C. and was awarded the Sussex County Badge in 1935. In 1936, he entered the Police College at Hendon, and on passing out in 1937 as a Junior Station Inspector went to Hammer smith, then to Hendon and came to L Division as a C.I.D. J Station Inspector in 1938. In L Division.he shot regularly for the Divisional team and in 1939 finished forth in the Royal Society of St. George Trophy gaining a silver medal. On the 14th April, 1940, he was re leased from the Police Service to join the Royal Naval Reserve. On completion of his training, he was sent on service to the Middle East where he acquitted himself well and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, vide London Gazette, 10th July, 1942. He was killed in North Africa on the 24th February, 1943. Lieut. Muffins was very keen on all kinds of rifle shooting, he was as much at home with a service lifle or 12 bore sporting gun as he was with a .22, and no doubt would have finished up with international honours. His loss is felt very deeply by the members of L Division, Metro Police R.C., and his other friends in the S.M.R.C. who join with headquarters in expressing sympathy with his relatives, in their grievous loss. Many members of the Gun and Ammunition trade will hear with regret of the death of Mr. McCririck, who collapsed and died whilst out with a shooting party near his home in Devonshire on September 18th. Mr. McCririck was well-known in this country and in Ireland as an Ammunition Representative for Imperial Chemical Industries. He was a keen shot, not only at game but also at clay birds, and did a great deal to popularise clay bird shooting, especially those events held under game shooting conditions. He was 60 years of age, and during the war years had been doing essential work at I.C.I. (Medals) Ltd., Birmingham. He leaves a widow, and two daughters, to whom we extend our sincere sympathy. Two sons—their only children—have been given to the war by Mr. and Mrs. Graham Elliott, of Beverley, Bishops Road, Hove. The elder, Sgt. Pilot Raymond Graham Elliott, was killed when returning from Germany in a bomber in 1940. The younger, Lieut. Gordon Francis Elliott, Cheshire Regt., aged 23, is now officially presumed killed in action at Mersa Matruh in June 1942. He was last seen in a blazing tank, which had been brought to rest in a wadi by enemy shell fire. Reported missing at the time, details which leave no doubt of the gallant young officer's death have now been supplied by another officer of the same battalion, who is a prisoner of war in Germany. Lieut. Elliott was born in Brighton, and after attending Prestonville School went to Brighton College. Both brothers were very keen on rifle shooting and were included in the college team at Bisley. They had a host of young friends in Brighton and Hove. The funeral took place at Worksop, on Saturday, of Mr. Clifford Foster Nowill, husband of Hilda Nowill, Manor Hill House, Worksop, and only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Nowill, Ranmoor, Sheffield. His deeply-deplored passing at the age of 52 occurred, following painful illness, at Worksop Victoria Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning week. A Captain of Artillery, and holder of the Military Cross for cool bravery in the last war, he was a keen sportsman, former amateur footballer, excellent shot, and en thusiastic member of the Worksop small-bore R.C., and above all, an accomplished golfer long associated with the Worksop Golf Club, of which he was Captain in 1931. The death of Mr. Alfred Mobbs, of 2, Hernewood Cottages, Gracious Lane, Sevenoaks, came very suddenly in his sleep. He had suffered from throat trouble all his life, and had various opera tions for this complaint. Mr. Mobbs was a keen cricketer, and was a member of the St. M a r k ' s C r i c k e t C l u b i n D r . To w n s e n d ' s t i m e . H e w a s a l s o a m e m b e r of the Pantiles M.R.C. in Tunbridge Wells. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Agnes Mobbs, a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Ibett, of Buckinghamshire, and two daughters, who have our sympathy. Reported missing in June, 1942, Lieut. Robert Morton, R.N.V.R., of Dorchester, is officially presumed to have lost his life on active service. The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty have conveyed this sad news to his wife at Merles Close, Manor Road, Dorchester, with their regrets and sympathy in the loss she has sustained. WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UKDecember, 1943. T H E R I F L E M A N41 Joining the R.N.V.R. before the war, Lieut. Morton was called up for service in January, 1940, and went abroad in the following year. He was 36 years of age. In civilian life he was engineer and secretary to Dorchester Gas and Coke, Ltd., coming from Cornwall about eight years ago to succeed Mr. Farnk Osmond in that position. He had a wide experience and high qualifications, and devoted much of his leisure to good work in the town. Lieut. Morton was a former secretary of the Rotary Club, and a member of the Dorchester R.C. In addition to Mrs. Morton, Lieut. Morton leaves a daughter. The death has occurred at his home at Crewe of Mr. Joseph Cap per, 12, Heathfield Avenue, who was well known for his prowess with the rifle. He shot at Bisley on 12 occasions, once in the King's Hun dred. He served for a while with the 2nd Cheshire Regt. Railway Volunteers, and twice won the Battalion Cup. He was with the de t a c h m e n t w h i c h w e n t t o L o n d o n o n Q u e e n Vi c t o r i a ' s D i a m o n d Jubilee. Aged 73, Mr. Capper, until his retirement, was employed for more than 20 years as a fitter with the L.M.S. Railway Co., at Crewe. He was a member of the Permanent Way Club, and a keen bowler. The funeral took place at Coppenhall Churchyard, following a service in the church, conducted by the Rev. John Beddow. M r. W i l l i a m M a r s d e n , o f H a w l e y, Tu e s l e y L a n e , G o d a l m i n g , who died on 31st October, aged 74, had the reputation of being one of the best rifle shots in the district. For well over half a century he had made rifle shooting more than a hobby, for, apart from his work, i t w a s a l m o s t h i s m a i n i n t e r e s t i n l i f e . Born at Tuesley, Mr. Marsden had spent all his life in the district. For a considerable period he was verger at Godalming Parish Church, relinquishing the position at the commencement of the last war when he responded to the appeal to e,x-N.C.O.'s to come forward as in structors. In his younger days, Mr.'Marsden, after serving in the 2nd Volunteer Batalion of the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regt., was in F (Godalming) Co., The Queen's Territorial Regt., from which he was discharged in 1914 on reaching the age limit. When he volim- teered as an instructor he was posted to the 8th Batalion, The Queen's Royal Regt., at Shoreham. Subsequently he undertook duty at The Queen's Depot at Stoughton, where he was eventually given charge of the gardens. He remained " on the strength " until 1924, but continued to hold the position in a civilian capacity up to nearly five years ago. When the present war broke out, Mr. Marsden joined the Milford Home Guard. Until his health began to fail he was most regular in attendance at parades or for guard duty, cycling in all weathers to and from Milford. Mr. Marsden had fired on something like 50 ranges, including Bisley, and in the " old days," Wimbledon. He was probably the last surviving original member of the Godalming R.C. which was formed in 1901, and he was also an old member of the Worplesdon R.C. He was in the team of the Godalming Co., of the Territorials which carried off the Lord Lieutenant's prize three consecutive years—from 1910 to 1912—and he also figured in the Godalming R.C.'s team in the year it secured the same trophy. Mr. Marsden, whose wife died in 1940, is survived by two daugh ters (twins)—Mrs. A. E. Puttock, a school teacher at Farncombe, a n d M i s s J . M a r s d e n . The funeral of Mr. Marsden took place at Busbridge Church. A " battle " eight years ago which resulted in the discontinuance of the charge to consumers for meters used in connection with the domestic supplies of water in the rural district is recalled by the sud- den death of Mr. J. Mountney, of Caer Glow, Tirton Lane, Church- down, and formerly of Weston Road, Gloucester. Until his retire ment 20 years ago Mr. Mountney, who was 80, was employed at the Wagon Works for 48 years, holding the position of foreman of the machine shop. He was captain of the Works miniature rifle club, and was a life member of the S.M.R.C. He was a crack marksman and had been the winner of the Astor County Cup, the Bell Medal, the Lord Roberts Medal, the North Gloucestershire Challenge Cup, the " Daily Express " Medal, and numerous other awards, including the certificate A class shot of the National Roll of Marksmen. The death took place after a short illness of Mr. William Edwin Dunn, of 27, Adcroft Street, Trowbridge, at the age of 73 years. During practically the whole of his working life he had been employed in the textile trade. For the past 28 years he was foreman spinner at Messrs. Palmer and Mackay's, and at the recent visit of Queen Mary to that firm he was presented to Her Majesty. He was keenly interested in rifle shooting and had won various trophies, including the Rifle Corps-silver challenge cup in 1904, and was one of eight selected to represent the 1st Wilts Volunteer rifle corps at the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in London. He gained a large circle of friends by his pleasing manner and sympathy is felt for his widow and only child, Mrs. Samuel E. Watts, of North Bradley. Members of the Metro politan Police acted as pall-bearers, and War Reserve Constables and Special Constables were in the cortege, with representatives of the Orpington and Crays branch of the British Legion, of which Mr. Russ was a member for many years. Mr. Russ was in the Royal Army Medical Corps in the 1914—18 war and was awarded the Military Medal. He joined the Special Constabulary in 1926, and was promoted sergeant in 1931, and on reaching the age limit in 1935, was trans ferred to the Auxiliary Force. In 1940 he volunteered for duty and was restored, to the active strength. He was a member of the R.C., and was well-known in the Crays as an Oddfellow, being a P.G. of the Pride of Kent Lodge. Major Hunt represented the Lud low Division for 15 years from 1903 and much prominence, was given to his views upon compulsory training, concerning which he made many notable speeches. From early days he was fond of hunting and at Eton and Cambridge was master of beagle packs. He was twice master of the Wheatland Hounds, from 1888 to 1898 and again from 1921 to 1924. For two seasons he was also joint master of the Shropshire Hounds. Major Hunt will be remembered as a former president of the Shropshire Society in London. Always keenly interested in rifle shooting he had been for many years president of Bridgnorth and District R.C., and he was also connected with Welling ton Conservative Club. He shot at Bisley for the House of Commons against the House of Lords. The death on Friday 3rd December, of Mr. William (Bill) C. Foster, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Foster, Sandy Mount Dairy, Bearsted, came as a great shock to the whole ofJBearsted and Thurnham. It would be no e.xaggeration to say that almost every body in the district knew him, arTd was familiar with his good nature and jovial manner. He was a part-time member of the National Fire Service (Bearsted Sub-Station), a good rifle shot and member of the Bearsted R.C. and the Men's Institute. Holy Cross Church. Bearsted, where for some years he was a chorister, was full for the funeral service, at which the vicar, the Rev. R. A. F. Parsons, officiated. N.R.A.
