The fact that only one of the competitors made the .score of 91, whilst all the others were well above that, is indicative of the good shooting which is taking place in the club. ^5 * The former Plunipton and District R.C. is to be revived and the membership will be open to the public, although there is no doubt that the Home Guard personnel will predominate. It was closed due to most of the original members being in the services, but now that fresh blood will be brought into the membership we have no doubt that under the presidency of Major Wigney, supported by Capt. L. A. Downey and Colonel W. Churchill Hale, with Hon. Secretary Mr. N. H. Cook, and Chairman T. Clark, this re-opening of the club will be regarded as well worth while. » . i - * We are glad to announce that at one time reported as missing, F.-Lt. D. W. Pallett is now operating with the R.A.F. in West Africa, as he will be best remembered as a civilian first rate marksman with the .22 rifle. He belonged to both the Ham and Petersham and the Embankment Rifle Clubs. * * The mascot of the Malvern Rifle Club is Gordon Tayloe, who is onlv 11 years of age, but rarely makes a,score with his .22 rifle lower than the 90 mark. He has now become an annual member of the Society. Lt.-Col. R. W. Gleadow, who bears that rank in the 1st Hull Cadet Bn. R,E,, is now putting all his energies into the training of the Army Cadet Force, of East "Forks. Our readers will be particu larly interested to know that he is ably assisted in the Hull Bn. by Major A. C. Brown and his, brother Sgt. Brown, together with the . Internationalist, A. Johnson, who are all in the Home Guarf As all three will be remembered as amongst the best local shots in pre war days, the boys in their charge should quickly reach the best possible standard! The result of the recent shoulder-to-shoulder match with the Scarborough (Green Howards) Cadet Bn., whose team were accompanied by Colonel W. Huffam, is given elsewhere in this issue. * * * We regret to .have to advise that two Converted Martini Rifles Nos. 943 and 949, have been taken from the range of the 58th Surrey Home Guard, Purley Platoon, and we warn our members against purchasing such rifles. It would be very helpful if they arc offered for sale to any of our members, if they would advise Mr. W. T. V. Parfriment, of 14, Brancaster La.ne. Purley. * * Messrs. Stratford, of Beckenham, Kent, and Mr. Luckman, arc concerned with the organisation of the London Civil Defence Regional Small-Bore Rifle League and the circular letter is now in the hands of the 92 sections forming that Civil Defence Force. This is only one of many .similar efforts on behalf of the Civil Defence Regional authorities to fulfil their obligations to the community. Naturally they have selected .22 rifle shooting to combine pleasure with duty, and to create a comradeship of interest which we hope will not only operate during the war, but long after it. * « - s Our members, and especially the International Match shooting badge holders and aspirants to that eminence, will remember " Bill" Schweitzer, of the U.S.A. team, who perhaps may still be regarded as one of the leading .22 marksmen in the whole of the United States. They will also remember General Reckord who, on one occasion, accompanied the U.S.A. Pershing Trophy Match Team and is a high official in the N.R.A., of America. Both these shooting celebrities recently came by air together to this country, and are now in residence at the Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, London, S.W., to fulfil their official duties. By the way, " Bill " is now Major William Schweitzer., They have lost no time in advising the S.M.R.C., and wish to renew old contacts with friends in the Society as soon as possible. « .A, 13-year-old Lerwick (Shetlands) boy, Peter Peterson, was killed nstantly by a bullet from a miniature rifle, which passed through his chest and injured Mrs. Robert Mair, who w.as near by. The rifle, was standing by a cvcle in the street and went off when upset by another boy. The question, of course, is why a boy of this age should be allowed to carry around a rifle, even if it was unloaded, but it is inconceivable why he was allowed to have any ammunition whatever in his possession. In any case, this fatality is a warning not only to juniors, but to adults, that every care should be taken that a rifle should be unloaded before leaving the firing point of a The Malton R.C. (Yorkshire) has just been revived, and amongst its 100 members there are 55 boys under 17, and 15 ladies. Special facilities are offered to members of the A.T.C., A.C.F., the Home Guard, and boys clubs. The club was originally opened by the late Lord Baden-Powell, in 1908. Supt. F. J. Keown, with P.-c. Riches as Hon. Secretary, supported by a strong Committee, are to be thanked for this impressive revival. ^ ^ At the A.G.M. of the Gravesend R.D., the Mayor (Councillor G. A. Pratt) presided, and spoke of the good work of the local club and of the S.M.R.C. After the Chairman, Mr. E. W. Dobson had reviewed the club's activities for the past year, and the facilities offered the Home Guard and other Defence Forces, the club being open five evenings per week, Mr. G. E. Tatchell (Hon. Treasurer), revealed a very satisfactory financial position and the Hon. Secreta^, Mr. J. Doust, together with the Committee were thanked for their labours for the club. It is hoped to renovate and alter the range for ac commodation of a larger number of members as soon as possible. * « * The West Ham and District R.C., who some years ago built and financed a range of their own at Forest Gate, is still going strong, despite a goodly number of their leading marksm.en having had to transfer their activities to the National Forces as well as to other districts. The remaining members are to be warmly congratulated on winning the Heslop Challenge Shield of the S.M.R.C., for the 3rd Division of the National League. * * * Major S. Johnson, one of Canada's crack marksmen, four times a member of the team at Bisley, and in 1939 well up in the Kings Prize, final stage, is now touring Canada, to train instructors, the result being that in most camps he has visited sho9ting has improved by nearly 1(X) per cent. A favourite device of his to teach men to shoot better is for them to fire their rifle with a penny balanced on the barrel to emphasize the need for holding the rifle still and steady. For the same reason, and to dernonstrate the rigidity and strength of the correct prone position, Major Johnson .gets one of the pupils to balance his full weight on the rifle just in front of the breech while it is held by another pupil. * * i Satisfactory reports were forthcoming at the annual meeting of the Stirlingshire Small Bore Rifle Association, held at Larbert. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr. J. B. Sutherland, Bridge of Allan, the chair was occupied by the vice-president, Mr. D. Liddell, Larbert. It was agreed to arrange the competition for the ensuing winter session on the same lines as last season, entries for the Leamie tournament to be in the hands of the secretary by 16th October" Office-bearers were re-elected as follows President, Mr. J. B. Sutherland ; Vice-President, Mr. D. Liddell ; Hon. Secre tary and Treasurer, Mr. A. Logie Larbert ; Hon. Match Secretary, Mr. W. Hobson, Falkirk. The Secretary intimated the offer of the gift of a trophy from Messrs. R. an'd F. Kelso, Glasgow, which, he said, had been accepted with gratitude. It was decided to allocate the cup for the indoor individual championship. The S.M.R.C. wish to record their appreciation of the good services of the Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. Alex Logie, of Larbert, and the Hon. Match Secretary, Mr. W. Hobson, of Falkirk. ^ * i f The Challenge Cup presented by Mr. C. Gamby, of Potters Bar for ■'2 team shooting in the district was presented to the winning team by Major Taylor, of the United States Army, at the Ritz Cinema, recently. The Competition was organised by Sgt, Eric Tomblin, of the local railway Home Guard and resulted in a cheque for £30 being handed over to the British Red Cross Fund. The winners of the Challenge Cup were the Enfield Police R.C., with the team score of 245 points, whilst the members of the L.N.E.R. Railway Police were runners-up to win the cup presented by Mr. C. Pygall. Leather wallets were presented to the individual competitors with the best scores, Pte. Hawkins and Cpl. Smith, both of the Home Guard. * * The Mapplenell and District R.C. recently concluded its most successful year in the history of the club and created a record by winning all four competitions of the Yorkshire M.R.A. These are the Yorkshire 25 yards Winter League ; the Bingham Cup ; the 25 yards Summer League for the Gleadow Cup ; and the 50 and 100 yards League for the Harrington Cup. They also added to their WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UK32 T H E R I F L E M A N December, 1943. success the National Roll of Marksman Class B Shield of the S.M.R.C. Most of the members of this club belong to the local Home Guard and Special Constables, and both these sections have had a good season, the former winning the Mackworth Praed Cup, and the latter the Hoyland Cup * A challenge shooting match between Leichars Special Constables and the Home Guard took place at Guardbridge M.R.C. range. The Home Guard team, led by Major Adam, was composed of several well-known local shots, but only beat the " Specials " by 6 points. Special Constable Adamson, Bruckley Farm, presided over the tea which followed. » * * .22 Rifle League Competitions are being organised by local units of the Home Guard in various parts of Britain. One such League has been • organised by Capt. E. J. Hawxwell, the Adjutant of the 9th Bn. Wilts Home Guard. Teams of ten men will fire one match per week in the usual League table manner, but the personnel of a team, must not consist of more than one officer and not more than four W.O.'s, or N.C.O.'s, whilst two fresh members must be in cluded in a team for each match shot. One shilling per team per match has to be contributed to the funds to enable prizes to be ob tained. We commend this idea to many other Home Guard units. » * » ■■ No country in the world could have provided so many men able to maintain so much enthusiasm over so long a period during relevant inactivity," said Rev. G. L. Robinson, minister of Trinity Methodist Church, Wolverhampton, when he addressed members of the 20th Wolverhampton Battalion Staffordshire Home Guard They still need to maintain the spirit of enthusiasm even in these days when the imminent danger appeared to have been overcome for vigilance was the enternal price of liberty he added. » The Worthing Miniature Rifle Association is one of the youngest and most energetic of local sporting organisations. Once again the Winter League is to be run, and this season will show an increase 01 two teams on last season's entries. Of last season's 18 entries four—Southdown Company Home Guard B, Police C Roval Observer Corps B and G.P.O. C—have dropped out. The Wardens and the Re^ue Service, who entered two separate teams last season are combining this year, and entering two teams, Rescue and Wardens and B. To balance these departures, six new teams are com peting m the Winter League. One of these will be the Admiraltv Platoon Home Guard (Whitehall) the Executive Committee having dwided to admit them as members of the Association as a com plimentary gesture, which, they say, must not be taken as creating a precedent. Besides gaining a silver cup, a silver spoon, and two certificates, Lieut. Osman won nearly £7 in prize money. His accomplishment is all the more notable because his left hand is without fingers and thumb. He rests his rifle on a mere stump of the limb. In his letter the Postmaster-General says : " His success would be a creditable achievement in any circumstances, but in view of his disability it was a performance of great distinction." » * * Mrs. C. Barker, that in the Associa tion's Home Guard section 26 teams have entered the Winter League. It is a " rifles-as-issued " competition, with no rests or slings and there are two divisions. At the end of the season both the winners and runners-up in each section shoot in the final. In the club section of the League 24 teams have entered, and these are also in two divisions, one a 5 start and the other a 15 start enforced handicap. » » The Corby R.C., Kettering, reports a most successful season being wound up by an all members range meeting, plus an accepted invitation to the local Army Cadet Corps and the local A.T.C. for a shoulder-to- shoulder match between teams of seven from these two Junior services. The A T C. used the club's B.S.A. match rifles and the Cadets the officially issued Mossburgh rifles. The A.T.C. won by a narrow margin. ^ At this gathering the presentation of cups and medals lor the Club Championship and Open Handicap took place. * * * All Divisions of the Suffolk County Summer League presented keen shooting throughout the season and the Lowestoft R.C. had no fewer than three teams in the honours list and two individual aggregate awards amongst the latter being the winning of the individual aggregate by the International Team Captain, Major W. J. Artis, who is also a member of the S.M.R.C. Council. The winners of the respective divisions were :—Division 1, Lowestoft A, individual aggregate, W-"- Keeble ; Division 2, Beccles A, with aggregate winner as above mentioned ; Division 3, Beck Row A team, individual aggregate A. V. Stockley ; Division 4, Aldeburgh D, individual aggregate W. h. Wisbey ; Division 5, Lowestoft E, individual aggregate F. Borham. Apparently this is the first time that Lowestoft A have b^n able to beat Leiston A for the Summer Cup. The Lowestoft R.C. Champion ship has been won by E. Frost, whilst the Handicap Competition was shared by E. Scarff and G. Atherton. The club is getting a lot ot interest by shooting shoulder-to-shoulder matches in the district. * * After a lapse of 29 years it is a source of delight to Mr. A. E. to renew his shooting activities with the Darlington C.D. Wardens H Group, who were runners-up in the 42nd Division of the S.M.K.c. Summer League. Mr. Crooks is both president and captain ot the club. Two of the members in their team were quite novices, whilst the team as a whole has been trained by Mr. Crooks. We always like to hear from our old members who can stage a come-back so ef ficiently . * * The City of Ely S.B.R.C. has had its annual general meeting and they had no cause to regret the admission of ladies to their club for the first time in its history, as the club has had a most successfu year not only in their total membership, but by reason of the fact that Their B team has won the 11th Division of the S.M.R.C. League. For the internal competitions Mr. A. Fisher has been successful in winning the Nicholl Cup with the splendid score of 1193 x 1200, and was olosHy followed by H. S. Wallis with 1191. The junior competition tor the Milton Cup was won by A. E. Fawcett, whilst A. Martin has been successful in winning the S.M.R.C. Master-shot Badge, thus joining company whh M?! K^ Wallis. The President of the club, the Very Rev. the Dean of Ely, and the several officials, including the secretary. Mr. C. Wickens, are congratulated on the very full interest which is now being taken in the club's activities. * * The annual general meeting of the Perth City and County Small bore R.C. attracted the usual good gathering, who were able to find summarised for them the healthy position of the club, which has a total of 179 members. Whilst little use was made of the outdoor range owing to transport difficulties, the indoor range in James Street has been continually improved by the work of the members and there are still more to come. The club holds no fewer than ten challenge trophies for open competitions, both of the S.M.R.C. and of the Dundee and Angus League, the premier competitions won, of coupe, are for the Scottish Cup and the Scottish Individual Championships. Mr. J. D. Nicol has won the club championship for the Crockart Cup and it is interesting to know that he has achieved 52 possible scores in league and club competitions during the season. The club owes much to its leading officials, amongst whom we wish to mention Major F. B. Smith, the hon. secretary, and the assistant hon. secretary, Robert Wilson, and Mr. Brown, the chairman, and his wife. * * * Major H. M. Meakin, M.C., president of the Keelby R.C., recently presented the medals and challenge trophy won by the members m the club competitions. He was much pruck by the friendly pint existing between not only the membership but the villages of Ulceby and Keelby, which was largely brought about by the rifle club. During the evening tribute was paid to the assistance the club had received from the well-known local small-bore marksmen, Messrs. Peacock, Jackson, Richardson, Chambers and Spink. * * At the annual presentation of prizes of the City of Glasgow R.C., Mr. J. R. Robertson, M.B.E., B.L., the assistant to the Chief Constable, who is president of this Club, presided and handed over the various prizes. The opportunity was taken to present the ten- year bar for the Distinguished Service Badge of the S.M.R.C. to Sgt. D. McGillivray, who has done so much yeoman service for the club as its hon. secretary and also for other shooting organisations in the West of Scotland area. * The presentations of the West of Scotland and Lanarkshire Associa tions were held jointly on Saturday, 16th October, in the Drill Hall of the Air Training Corps, 32F Squadron Headquarters, Coplaw Street. The turnout was very good, and Lt.-Col. C. B. Vandeluer, D.S.O., late the Cameronians, honorary president of the West of Scotland S.B. Association, presided. He was accompanied on the platform by Mr. N. McMonnies (chairman Lanarkshire Association), Mr. D. McGillivray, Mr. T. Burry (hon. vice-president, Lanarkshire), J. Guy (hon. vice-president. West of Scotland, Mr. P. Gentleman (vice- chairman, West of Scotland), Mr. A. G. Hutchinson (vice-chairman, Lanarkshire), A. A. Smith (general secretary) and J. Horsburgh (hon. treasurer). West of Scotland. Col. Vandeleur handed over the trophies and had a word for each competitor, while the speakers were Messrs. McMonnies, Burry, Smith and McGillivray. Thanks are due to the officers of the 32 F.A.T.C. for the use of the hall free of charge. This is the second occasion they have come to our assistance in the past two years. A full prize list of the West of Scotland competitions was given in the last issue. * The Harrow Civil Defence Services R.C. have built for themselves a first rate open-air 25 yards range at the rear of Elm Grove Road Rescue Depot, Harrow. It has meant the removal of hundreds of tons of earth to make the range, but, now it is completed, they have one of the most effective, neat and tidy ranges that we have seen. The opening ceremony was'performed by Admiral Sir Edward Evans, K.C.B., C.B., D.S.O., on Thursday, 25th November, at 3.15 p.m. before a good gathering, and he afterwards went on to present the trophies and prizes of the club. ^ ^ The Oldham Special Constabulary R.C. formed about four years ago by a few 1914-1918 Marksmen, is now among the most enthu siastic clubs in the country, with about 50 members shooting regularly. The covered " Holt " range, 25 yards, built by the members themselves contains heated club room with gun lockers and steel ammunition safe. A unique feature is the target lighting by Fluorescent Tube, installed just over a year ago as an experiment. This has proved an outstanding success and has contributed in no small measure to the increasingly high standard of shooting. The club believe they were one of the pioneers in this system of target lighting. Among the many enjoyable matches arranged with Army and Home Guard teams, both postal and shoulder-to-shoulder have also been chal lenges from brother " Specials " in various parts of the country and the A Team has yet to be defeated in this series. Teams are entered WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UK36 T H E R I F L E M A N December, 1943. in ten Leagues this winter. There is also the annual Divisional Team Shoot for a cup presented by the Commandant, H. B. Shaw Esq and a three monthly Challenge for a Shield presented by the Deputy Comrnandant. Both these shoots are highly prized by members, and there is keen competition for team places in each of the four divisions, the matches are usually followed by a convivial gathering for trophy presentation, etc., etc., which^adds^to the popularity of the occasions. going " great guns " in its range in Henderson Street during the past year, and at the general meeting of the club Mr. John B. Sutherland the Chairman, was able W preside over a good assembly of its men and women members. The Honorary Prpident of the Club, Mr. D. S. MacGregor and Mrs. Gordon Wright, the President of the Ladies Section, expressed their delight in the way things had been going for the club, but the former required more shooting members in the men's section. It was evi- aent that the whole mernbership are inspired by this lady and gentle man, and It was appreciated that much of the energetic enterprise of tne rnanagement was due to the ungrudged labojirs of the honorary secretary, Mr. Angus D. King. The Club had raised £156 for Christ- village men and women in the Services, and these would be distributed to 340 members. In the summer for the Village Victory Fund £200 went into the coffers of the Government free of mter^t. All this money was raised in shooting gatherings and a f o, directed by the members of the club. A record 01 tne club successes in the past were reviewed to stimulate aspiration for the present and future. The club championship for the Alexandra Trophy was won by Mr. D. W. Foster, with Mr. D. J. Munroe as mner-up. T he second division for the Pullar Trophy was won by U. Watson, and the Handicap Competition for the MacGregor Trophy w • The Ladies Championship for the Mrs. Gordon Wright Trophy, was won by Miss C. Morrow with Mrs. D. W Foster as runner-up. He also presented four sets of medals, one being to the Cardiff H.G. who had won Division 40 of the Society's Summer League, another set to Cardiff Ladies, who had won the 45th Division of that League and one set of bronze medals to their B team, who had been runners- up in Division 20 and one set of bronze medals for the D team, who had been runners-up in Division 38. In tracing the advancement of the Club, Mr. Pethard paid tribute to the zeal of the club's officials, who had inspired the membership to a very great extent. He also urged that the Club should endeavour to obtain a municipal outdoor range in the Castle grounds, where there appeared to be ample facili ties and a safe site to accommodate shooting up to 100 yards range. On behalf of the club he presented first prize, a silver cup and replica in the Cardiff Royal Infirmary competition to Major F. In his remarks he fully supported Mr. Walker on the value of .22 rifle shoot ing as a first class training for the use of the larger calibre weapon. Mr. A. E. Smith the hon. secretary of the club then presented the cheque of £50 to the representative of the Cardiff Royal Infirmary, Mr. Victor Lewis. The financial return of the competition had been £46 and the club added another £4 to make up the round sum. Mr. Lewis expressed his deep appreciation and thanks for the annual efibrt which the Club had made on behalf of the Infirmao'- Coijn. Baden Smith, the Chairman, called attention to the fact that besides accommodating the club membership, the club gave accommodation on the range with use of shooting equipment to Home Gu^ds, Women's Home Defence members, the Air Training Corps and Civil Defence personnel, etc,, and the premises were open six nights weekly. The present and potential membership justified their hopes of a great future for the club. He would do his best to see what could be done regarding the prospect of an outdoor range in the Castle grounds. On behalf of the membership, he had been asked to announce a pre sentation tonight to their Range Officer, Mr. R. He called upon the guest of the evening to present to Mr. Scammell a silver inkstand, suitably engraved as a token of the mem bers' regard for his services. Mr. Scammell expressed his surpris ing and gratef^ul thanks for the unexpected gift. * * » On Saturday, 30th October, in a large room of the Griffin Hotel, Leeds, the Association of Leeds and District R.C, held its fifth annual general meeting. Despite the size of the room, it was not large enough to hold the ICQ and more members who attended when the Acting President, Coun. John Tate, M.B.E., presided, at 3.30 p.m. Iri open ing the meeting. Councillor Tate congratulated the Asscoaition on the excellent progress which had been made during the year. Be sides the Association now numbering 31 clubs, he was heartily glad to see the steps which had been, and which were still being taken to help the Youth of Britain to learn to shoot. The financial and other business of the meeting then proceeded, after'which, Mr. G Pethard, the secretary of the S.M.R.C., was invited to speak on the present and future of small-bore rifle shooting. Emphasising that he was there on behalf of the Council of the Society, to congratulate the Leeds Association, he mentioned the improvement in the enthusiasm tor .22 rifleshootingand that the S.M.R.C. now consists of approximately 2 800 affiliated units. This membership included the several local defence forces, male and female, and the young people's organisation. At present very large competitions were being run open to them all as well as some restricted to certain sections of the defence lorces. In normal times not only were there numerous postal competitions but open meetings at Bisley for the National Championships and in the Provinces. Eor the future we had the healthy prospect of many more youths learning to shoot in the official movements now st,yted by the authorities, many more ladies and certainly the men 9f the Home Guard to come into the movement. For the moment it was difficult to get shooting requisites, especially .22 rifles, but the Counc was doing its best to plan for the future in this respect as well as in all others appertaining to .22 rifle shooting. Meantime however, the clubs and associations should plan for the provision of better and more rifle rangeL This City was lucky in having Mr. G. Burnell and his colleagues all such enthusiasts. Under difficulties they had perse vered and prospered, therefore he thought that both they and the Movement hi general could be best helped if the City authoriues could support shooting as a recreation for the people of their Ci y in the same way as they did for other recreative pastinjs. should be borne in mind that shooting was serving both a national, as well as recreative purpose. As the Acting President was a Councillor he fU sure that Coun. Tate would consider the matter and do his best to help the Association in this way. In ffianking the speaker for his renrirks Coun Tate promised that if the local clubs would get to other and plan the case for submission to the City authorities, he tould do his utmost to support the proposal of a municipal range. The B T H (London) Sports Cliib S.B.R.C. held its annual presenta- lion of CUDS at the works in their recreation building at Willesden on Friday, 19th November, when their president, Mr. T. Pethafd of the S.M.R.C. was present, and after a meal the Chairman of the Club Mr C Humphreys, spoke of its excellent progress and its successes durffig the past year, such being as follows :-ln the Winter League 1942-43 the club ran three teams These were placed in 13 h 24th and 28th divisions respectively, and the teams finished 2nd 1st and 3rd respectively. In the 1943 Summer League the club ran three teams in the 4th, 9th and 21st divisions respectively, and the teams finished 7th, 8th and 2nd respectively. In the current winter again thrM teams were taking part in the 6th, 12th and 20th divisions. The C team reached the semi-finals of the National Team Handicap and lost tha match when larger gauges were used. In the competition for the thr Engineers' Shields the club's .A team was fourth, with an "^ora^e or 488.8. At a Supper and Social evening held at the North Eastern Hotel, Goole, on Thursday evening, 11th November, 1943, advantage was taken of the occasion to present to the Secretary, Police Constable G.W. Marsh, the S.M.R.C. Distinguished Service Medal for secretarial services of not less than five years with the Bradford and Goole Divi sions of the West Riding Constabulary Rifle Clubs. The presentation was made by Alderman T. Fearnhead, Chairman of the Goole Police Rifle Club, who, on making the presentation said that until P.C. Marsh came to Goole, there was no interest in rifle shooting amongst the Police, and it was mainly due to his enthusiasm and hard work that the Rifle Club was in its present sound position. The Goole Police Rifle Club, which has now forty-four members, has been in existence for just one year, with a bank balance of £19, it was not only sound financially, but in other ways. Alderman Fearnhead said it gave him great pleasure to present the medal on behalf of the S.M.R.C. In reply, P.C. Mar.sh thanked Alderman Fearnhead for his remarks, he also thanked the members for their appreciation of his services, and said he wished to make it clear that if there was any credit due it was due equally as much to the others members of the committee, especially to Soecial Constable Cowling, the treasurer and to Special Constable H. Smith, who must have walked dozens of miles up and down the range in his self appointed job of " target fixer." Special Constable Smith had never missed a single shooting night s i n c e t h e C l u b w a s f o r m e d . In conclusion P.C. Marsh thanked all the members for their sup port in the past, and hoped they would continue to support the Rifle Club in the future. The company, which included Mr. T. Handley, J.P., and Mr. N. G. Silvester, Clerk to the Justices and Divisional Commander of the Goole Special Constables, were entertained by various artists and this, the first social event of the Rifle Club, was thoroughly enjoyed Ijy all. Hugh Austin Bentinck Salmond, York and Lancaster Regiment, late of the Royal Corps of Signals (Commissioned in R.A.F.), who died on Wednesday, 20th October, at the age of 62 years. He had been resident at 82, Chaucer Road, Bedford, since 1928. For a period before the outbreak of war he was A.R.P. Officer for the Borough of Bedford. Since the year 1929 he had been a member of the Council of the S.M.R.C. That same year he was appointed Captain of the Dewar Match team of Great Britain. This appointment was repeated in 1930 and 1935. In 1929 he won the Beds. County Silver Medal, and at the S.M.R.C. Lowestoft Open Meeting in 1930 he won the. Inexpert Aggregate. He was Captain of the England team against Scotland and Wales on several occasions. He called the meeting at which it was decided to form the Bedford R.C., and he founded the Bedfordshire Association, both these meetings being held in March, 1929. For several years he acted as Captain and secretary of the County Association, and for five years was Chairman and Captain of the Bedford R.C. But he was much more than that—he was a good friend to all riflemen. Born at Longwood Hall, Pinxton, Derbyshire, Lt.-Col. Salmon had a distinguished military career. Educated at Bedford School and Wellington College, he was commissioned at the age of 18 in the Royal N. Lanes. Regiment, with whom he fought in the South African War. He served for seven years in India with the Yorks. and Lanes. Regiment, and specialised in Signals. In the 1914-18 War he was seconded to the Royal Engineers and he was responsible for raising the first dispatch riders. Then he became Deputy Director of Signals in Mesopotamia, where he served as Lieut.- Colonel until the end of the War. He was one of the pioneers of the Signals branch of the R.E.s and helped to form the Royal Corps of Signals. In York he was Chief Signals Officer of the Northern C o m m a n d . He was buried in Bedford Cemetery on Saturday, 23rd October (no flowers), the Rev. A. Edington officiating. His family have our deep condolence in their great loss. A well-known charity worker in Wembley, Mrs. J. J. Bucklow, died at her home, 31, Meadow Way, at the age of 75 on Saturday, 9th October. Despite her age she was an enthusiastic knitter for the Armed Forces. For the first time since 1919 this sad blow brought all the fam ly together, and these included amongst her five sons, Flying- Officer Ernest Bucklow, who had obtained special leave. Prior to joining the R.A.F. in 1941 he was hon. secretary of the Wembley R.C. By the death of Mr. A. R. R.
