H-G. Shoot on Bombed City of London Site F r o m S l a r H o m e G u a r d N e w s . Home Guards from the 28th Battalion COL, all Post Office workers, have built an open air live ammunition rifle and Sten gun range in Wood Street, City, on the site of blitzed buildings. The range is so successful that ail shooting time is booked for weeks. The range is open every evening from 5.30 to dusk except on Saturdays, when it opens at 2, and on Sundays when morning shoots arc arranged. By arrangement with the City authorities Wood Street is closed to the public during practice and police patrol the area. Home Guards did all the excavating, and other work voluntarily. Two sergeants, expert bricklayers, put the finishing touch to the range, which is 15 feet deep and has a 30 feet high 17th century wail. In a recent competition on this range a team of eight from the 28th Battalion defeated a team from the City Police in a rifle shoot. Jn the return match on the police miniature range in Bishopsgate the City men heat the Home Guard. Range discipline is always stricily observed. There is a covered firing platform so that practice can go on in wet weather. An admirable feature are the snap targets which appear for only three seconds and which were cleverly installed by P.O. engineers who are Home Guards. Marris of Mapple well, near Barnsley. The wood of the shield has been shaped out of wood obtained from an old baronial hall called Gawber Hall, near Barnsley, which is believed to be well over 700 years old. The metal part of the shield consists of a 5-bull target and the top and bottom name plates with the shaped metal rifles let into each side are all made from finely polished sheet brass. The whole set up is a most attractive one, and we regard it as a valuable contribution to the Society's list of trophies. The work was done by Mr. C.- Marris himself, and this reminds us that the late Lord Sudeley of Ham and Petersham, himself a n a m a t e u r s i l v e r s m i t h , a l s o m a d e c o n t r i b u t i o n s o f a house-boat trophy in wood and silver to the Society and to his club many years ago. Mr. C. Marris will be best remembered by his success in winning the English Small bore Championship for the St. George's Challenge Cup i n t h e s e a s o n 1 9 3 9 - 4 0 . B u t h e i s a l s o r e m e m b e r e d e s pecially in local circles for his ever ready assistance as a coach of small-bore rifle shooting for teams in the Barnsley area. This opportunity is taken to express the thanks of the shooting fraternity for his latest gift and help to shooting. WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UKSeptember, 1943. T H E R I F L E M A N 57 West of Scotland S.B.R.A. Open Meeting 13th, 14th and 15th August, 1943 Despite adverse weather conditions the attractive programmes of the West of Scotland S.B. Rifle Association both for the Service Section on 7—9th August, and the Open prize Meet ing on 13—15th August, were successfully accomplished at the Croftfoot Ranges, comprising 25, 50 and 100 yards distances. M u c h c r e d i t i s d u e t o t h e E x e c u t i v e O f fi c e r s M e s s r s . D . M c G i l l i - vray, the Organising Secretary, Angus Smith of the Glasgow Police, the General Secretary ; J. Guy of Beith, Chief Range Officer ; W. Kenny of Renfield, the Chief Statistical Officer ; and their several assistants both ladies and gentlemen, together with the Boy Scout Range runners. At the Services meeting the first week-end only three "possible" scores were recorded in an open prize meeting held by the West of Scotland Small Bore Rifle Association at Croftfoot, Glasgow, at the first week-end. One was scored in the Martin kneeling competition by a Glasgow Home Guard officer. Lieutenant Menzies, and the other two in unlimited competitions by Captain F. B. Smith, Perth, and Lieutenant C. Hutton, Glasgow. The championship was won by J. Cowan, Kirkcudbright, who had a score of 484 out of a possible 500. Owing to a ruling debarring a competitor who is not a member of a club affiliated to the Association however. Cowan could receive only the prize money, and the House of Eraser Trophy and replica were won by a young member of the Home Guard, J. R. Sutherland, Glasgow, who was one point behind Cowan. Sutherland also won the junior championship of the meeting. Forty-three team entries were received, the principal competition being the Seaforth Team Championship, which was won by Bridge of Weir with 755, Kilsyth being second with 743. In an inter-county event for teams of six the Glasgow team was successful, with Ren frewshire second, Ayrshire third, and Stirlingshire fourth. At the Open Meeting a better entry than before was received. In all 222 competitors took part in the individual events, whilst in the team shoots a number of Home Guards took part, but did not shoot as individuals. In the Haig Competition of the Scottish Competition there were 44 competitors, whilst in the Grand Aggregate competitions there were 50. The Inexpert Championship attracted 39 individuals. In the Team Championship for the Pullar Targe ten teams competed. Amongst other good friends present we were pleased to see Mr. W. D. Findlay of Aberdeen, member of the S.M.R.C. Council; Mr. T. S. Cuthbert of Glasgow, the well-known Scottish International Service rifle marksman ; Capt. Cotching, of Stirlingshire ; G. Green field of Motherwell, one time chairman of the Lanarkshire Association; whilst Mr. R. A. Kelso of the well-known firm who act as the S.M.R.C. agents in the area, was of exceedingly helpful on the reception side. We were pleased to welcome Col. G. Gould, of Ham and Petersham, who did well by winning the Open Inexpert Aggregate ; and also the well-known shooting personality of Sheffield, Bisley and other places, Jimmy Johnstone. Representatives were forward from Aberdeenshire, Fife, Angus, Edinburgh, the Border Counties and three from England. Members of clubs in Ayrshire, Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire were forward in full strength. Mr. G. Pethard, the secretary of the Society, who was representing the Council of the S.M.R.C., was present, and an opportunity was taken to discuss post-war possibilities with county representatives. It was much regreted that Lt.-Col. Sir Lionel Fletcher was unable to be present and he sent his regrets. For the first time since 1939, the Haig Memorial Cup, which is the individual small-bore championship of Scotland, was competed for under the original rules—the details being squadded. Among the 44 aspirants for this championship were six former holders. ^ , A. J. Nicol, Perth, the holder, was unable to be present, being engaged on more serious shooting in the Middle East. His father J. D., a former British internationalist, won the coveted trophy a medal and £3. Thus for the third successive year the trophy is retained by the Nicol family. A unique achievement. The grand aggregate, the open championship for the A. L. John stone Cup, was won by J. G. Proudfoot, Edinburgh, J. D. Nicol taking second place. , , . , Ten teams contested the open team championship for the ' Pul lar Targe "—Renfield, Glasgow, winning by a single point from Ardeer B. Renfield won this championship once before, exactly 30 years ago, at the S.M.R.C. Dundee meeting. R. Gray won the confined championship, the T. S. Cuthbert Cup, after a tie with G. Robertson, Falkirk—the graduated gauges de ciding the issue on the 100 yards target. The recently formed Croftfoot Club excelled by winning the con fined team championship. The holders, Glasgow Pofice, were second. P r i z e w i n n e r s b e l o w : — N o . 1 C o m p e t i t i o n . T H E H A . I G . F r o m a S p e c i a l C o r r e s p o n d e n t . IT was not until June 21, last that the National Rifle Association were able to announce the full results of the " King George V " Trophy and the Imperial Challenge Shields Competitions for 1942, and when he did so, Mr. C. R. Martin, the Acting Secretary of the N.R.A., included in the results a copy of a message dated Windsor Castle, May 31, 1943, which ran :—" I laid your letter before the King, and you will be pleased to hear His Majesty considers that in view of the many existing difficulties it is satisfactory to have obtained so many entries, and hopes that the results of the competitions in 1943 will be equally successful.—(Signed) Alick Alexander, Keeper of Privy Purse." It may be briefly recalled that these competitions for miniature rifle shooting have been conducted annually since 1910 by the N.R.A. with the object of encouraging every boy of British birth between the ages of 12 and 19 years to learn how to use a rifle. During all these years, no fewer than 650,000 boys (and girls) throughout the Empire have participated in friendly rivalry in one of the greatest phases of National Defence. The competitions were founded by Hon. Colonel W. Raymond Ffennell, South African Defence Force, and by means of his generous endowment the prizes are provided annually and all admi nistrative expenses in connection with the conduct of the competitions on Breat Britain are defrayed. The War Office and the Defence Departments of the Dominions have rendered valuable assistance in the conduct of the competitions by the N.R.A. The shooting conditions comprise two deliberate, rapid or time limit practices of 10 rounds each, in various positions at 25 yards and at Bisley 300 yards targets reduced for that distance, have p.s. 100. Those for the junior boys 12—15 years of age are somewhat easier than for the senior 15—19 years. It is of special interest to note that (1) in spite of the difficulties involved owing to the War, the Union of South Africa furnished the highest number of competitors from any of the Dominions or the Mother Country ; (2) since the competitions were inaugurated in 1910, over 650,000 boys and girls have competed. Over 14,000 boys com peted in 1942 for the " King George V " Trophy, which is awarded to the country showing the highest musketry efficiency in the Imperial Challenge Shields competitions. There is no limit to the number of boys or teams that may enter in every country, and after all have fired, the National Te a m o f 3 , 0 0 0 i s s e l e c t e d f r o m t h e b e s t t e a m s . Humour—with a Lesson I have an allotment outside the Range and on Sunday afternoons work there while the W.H.D. get on with the good work. Last Sunday one of them came out and asked me if I would give her a little help. She showed me a 6-Bull card she had just fired, and all shots were low, grouped fairly well 8's about 6 o'clock. I asked her why she had not come up, and she said that MissX had just used the rifle and had done fairly well. However, I altered the sights 8 clicks up and she got down on the mat—when on the aim she turned round and said :— " Did you put the sights up ?" " Yes, darling," said 1. " Well," said she, " That's funny, for I still see the bull right bang in the middle of the ring." " Never mind," said I, " you fire." She did, and got a Bull. —Mike.
