Total membership 85 (12 ladies and 13 juniors) and a progiamme cf 16 visiting matches, II of which were won, are facts which emerge from the Secretary's report for 1945-46 season. Nine team and individual competitions, improve ments to the range, overhauling of club rifles and an e.xtension of the visiting match programme are some of the plans to restore the club to its former flourishing pre-war state. It was incorrectly re ported in our last issue that the new champion is Mr. Leadbeater of Corby. * « * Mrs. V. E. Barker, one of the few lady secretaries of an essentially masculine rifle club, is proud of the Society's Distinguished Service Award with bar, which, as she says, will remind her of the happy times spent teaching the gentle art on the Rotherham R.C. range during the war. " I have a very happy association with my club ; value the respect and appreciation shown to me by the membeis in their pre sentation of a rifle at the beginning of the year and 1 hope to be able to carry on ' ranging' with them in the years of peace," writes Mrs. Barker . * * * • One of our oldest clubs. Lea and District, has had to close tlrrough lack of accommodation, but happily several of the members have joined the nearby Preston Home Guard R.C., of which one of them, Mr. L. H. Westray has been appointed captain. » » Dropping only one point in 12 targets. Constable A. A. Smith has again won the City of Glasgow Police championship. His score was 16 points better than Lieut. A. F. Howat, the ruimer-up. A. A. Smith also won the Grand Aggregate event for the White Horse Cup, scoring 1602.158 to D/Constable S. Borthwick's 1601.844, the runner-up. A prize meeting was held in Octobei, the conditions of which attracted the average marksman, viz., " Hidden Score," won with 92, "Declared Handicap" and " Diawn Handicap." The Team Competition conditions required teams of three, ^awn by ballot, from Divisional Representatives. Headquaiters B won with 296 ex 300, each man winning 50 cigarettes. Southern Division A being second 295, each man winning 20 cigarettes. In his footnote to the prize list, Sgt. D. Woodhead stales that new members of the Middlesbrough Police R.C. have been welcomed, adoing that when the difficulty of obtaining ranges is overcome the League hopes to extend its activities still further. To Stimulate interest the Macrae system of handicapping has been intro duced and, as a result, much keener competition for the leadership is anticipated. In a " confession " to members of the Ca-nbridge S.B. League at their social in the Dorothy Cafe the Borough Member of Parliament told how, during a recent long sitting in the House, he had the " irreverent thought "—" If only I had a .22." But Major Symonds' prospective target was not a member of the Opposition. His eye was on the roof of the Chamber, and, in order not to be sent to sleep by the person talking at the time, he counted the electric light clusters. There were 10 of them, each with 24 bulbs and no shades. It was these that presented such a fascinating target ! Major Symonds was responding to the toast of " The Guests," which had b^n pro posed by Inspector Silk, of the Borough Police, and apologised for the absence of his wife and for his lack of preparedness for a speech. The latter was due, he said, to the fact that he had entered the " gas works "at 10.15 on Monday morning and had not left until a quarter to one that morning. But he was glad to see the spirit of friendly comradeship which existed within the League, and said it was an c.xcellent thing for people, whatever difteiences of opinion they might hold on certain aspects of life, to meet together on common ground. Mr. George Havves was in the chair, and among those supporting him was the president of the League, Mr. B. N. Bebbington. The Winter League trophies and the prizes won at the League open meeting were presented during the evening. The toast of the League was proposed by Lt.-Col. Guy F. Dale, and was responded to by Major Wcatherhead (vice-president). The entertainment was of a high standard. » » At the first post-war annual meeting of the Lichfield R.C. an appeal was made for more members to replace those who had left the dis trict and others lost during the war. After 18 years as secretary- Mr. W. E. Byng resigned and Mr. F. E. Boston was appointed in his stead. The club expressed its extreme gratitude for his long and f a i t h f u l s e r v i c e s a n d a s k e d h i m t o r e m a i n i n o f fi c e a s c h a i r m a n i n order that they might have the benefit of his experience. Mr. Boston takes over the secretarial duties with a £10 balance. Might we suggest that Home Guard O.C.A. organisations be approached to augment the membership? * • Continuing their crusade for nation-wide adoption of shoulder- to-shoulder match conditions, the Worthing enthusiasts travelled to Croydon on Sunday, 8ih December, their ardour undamped by the torrential rain which persisted all day, nor the narrow defeat inflicted upon them by the home team. Best score of the day was recorded by Mr. M. Cox (Worthing) with the possible 200. Two Croydon marksmen, Messrs. Spririti and St. Jolin, scored 199, and there were numerous 198's, including one by Mrs. M. Edyvean-Walker, the famous lady international of Bognor, who, with her husband (197) and son, mysteriously disappeared from the scene of operations after lunch ! It was an exceedingly interesting match with only one or two points separating the teams until the final detail. Totals, 3,907 and 3,888—teams of 20—two targets each at 25 yards range. High light of the match—efficient organisation and the lunch. Ill * * Our hearty congratulations to Mr. E. V. Hartley, shooting for Blackwall Yard R.C., who. in the City of London League (Division 6), scored possibles in three rounds during November. * Started in September last year, the riffle club formed by employees of The Wellraan Smith Owen Eng. Corporation of Darlaston, South Staffs, now has 150 members, an excellent range and, in their first year, a splendid record of success. Teams were entered in the Coimty League, A and C finishing runners-up in their respective divisions, whilst the captain (Mr. J. A. Parker) had best average in Division 4. » » » . From Mr. W. Checkley, the league secretary, we have received results of the shoulder-to-shoulder league results of the Nottingham shire S.B.R.A., which is for teams of six, best five to count. In the second division Carlton B returned 489 to beat Gas Dept. 477, City 479 to beat Cafferata A 478 and Raleigh's 467 losing to Royal Ordnance Factory A 481. » » Mr. T. P. Hartley, whose work as County secretary for Kent was so effective, is now County secretary in Devon, and that he has made a good stai t is proved by the record entry of 42 teams for the Winter League. Mr. H. A. Pringle of Torrington has been appointed match secretary and Mr. R. Tuckett of Exeter retains the position of treasurer. He is a member of the Stuart Road R.C., Plymouth. From his father, who is keen to encourage a natural aptitude for shooting, he will receive an S.M.R.C. Life Membership as a Christmas gift. * » Wimbledon Park R.C., one of the oldest small-bore clubs in the country, membership lists of which include many famous inter nationals, has enjoyed a very successful summer season. Although A team was beaten into second place in the National League, B and C teams won Divisions 10 and 14 respectively. The existence of the club, particulaily during the trying petioa of the late war, and its subsequent successes, are due to the zeal and enthusiasm of that famous international Mr. P. G. Richardson, who has encouraged a num.ber of local ex-Home Guardsmen to join. Mr. Richardson is a leading and active member of the S.M.R.C. administration and is a joint hon. treasurer. To Mr. D. H. Mann the less expeiienced members owe a great deal for his kindly counsel and coaching. The Leicestershire and Rutland Association Winter League is formed by five divisions and a total of 45 teams. Mr. P. V. Rogers, the Coimty secreta^-, is congratulated on the gooa entry and the enthusiasm now existing within the area under his administration. We like his News Sheet comments ! 4: * * Leicester City Transport M.R.C. held a prize meeting in November for all clubs affiliatea to the Leicestershire and Rutland S.B.R.A., in which some keen and interesting shooting was recorded. In the unlimited event the " sum " of id. was awarded for each bull scored, Mr. P. V. Rogers amassing Is. 4a. and Mr. Smith ^d. Leading winners were : L. R. Lewis (G Div. Wardens), H. D. The club lost a very good friend and former secretary by the death of Mr. L. E. Smith, after a long and trying illness in the Ashford County Hospital. Mr. T. J. Dowden, captain, represented the club at Mortlakc Crematoiium, and members sent a w r e a t h i n t h e f o r m o f a t a r g e t . * * The 70th H.A.A. Cadet Regiment, R.A. of Liverpool hold all the shooting trophies for the area, both full-boie and small-bore, in cluding trophies for landscape target shooting. Their latest success was in winning the " Rootes " Cup for full-bore marksmanship. Three boys who won S.M.R.C. Marksman Badges are now in the Army and doing very well indeed in shooting, in fact the unit has received several letters of praise from C.O.s under whose command these ex-(3adets are now serving. * * A highly successful season is reviewed by Major F. B. Smith (secretary) in the 30th annual report of the Perth Ciiy and CounW S.B.R.C. Outstanding achievement was the success of the club in winning the Scottish Cup—on the range of the Dunfermline Club they beat Edinburgh Citizens with the highest possible British record score of 800. The ladies' team has brought honours to the club, as reported in the Women's R.A. repoi t elsewhere in this issue, and Miss M. F. Millar won the Junior Individual Championship for the Sir Harry Lauder trophy. In the Women's International no fewer than six Perth members out of a team of 10 were selected to shoot for Scotland. Other successes, too numerous to mention, have been gained by this old-established and flourishing club, which has a membership of 138, including 20^ ladies and 31 juniors.- Mr. George Christie, S.M.R.C. agent for Aberdeen, Banff, Kin cardine, Moray and Nairn, has started an Inter-County Association League. Five teams entered, and after all fixtures and dates had been agreed five more applicants had to be refused. The counties named (Moray and Nairn forming one team) plus Aberdeen City will fire in nine rounds ending in March. An excellent idea to en courage county representative shooting and give experience to the " n o t - s o - e x p e r i e n c c d . " * Lt.-Col. ■ F. L. Pettman, writing from the Drill Hall, High Road, London, N.17. in the Tottenham and Edmohton Herald is appealing for prizes to encourage his 4/6th Cadet Bn. As most Army type metal huts are corrugated it is necessary to restrict the area ot fire to within the limits of the building by sandbag or timber baffling before War Office range approval can be granted. Canada's four classes of small-bore shooters styled Master, Expert Marksman and Rifleman, gathered at the Vaiighan ranges, Lachine' Quebec, for their National Matches early in September. Generous cash prizes attracted a satisfactory entry, and generally speaking scores were high. Limited support gave the few Rifleman Class competitors a good return for their eflbrts. In the Master Class possible scores with a high percentage of x's were numerous. The programme comprised 17 events, including the Dewar team and an Inter-Railways match. » » Besides the old-established and effectively organised Ulster Association of Miniature Rifle Clubs a new association under the title Northern Ireland R.A. is now operating. Purpose of the new organisation is to encourage the backward, ill-equipped and hitherto unknown clubs and when sufficient clubs are organised in any county the work of the new Association will be to foster separate county organisation and affiliation with the parent body. Mr. E. A. Forbes, the hon. secretary, will work closely with the Ulster Association, of which he is a trustee and executive committee member. * The London Busiiiess Houses League, which was most popular pre-war, is to be revived.
