OPEN PRIZE MEETING On Sunday, 25th August, the Colchester R.C. held their first all-day post-war small-bore prize meeting on the Middlewick fanees, by pel mission of the O.C. Colchester Garrison.' Forty-eight marksmen and women from clubs in the locality were present to shoot in the 18 events arranged over distances of 25, 50 and 100 yards. In good weather the programme was successfully completed due chiefly to the untiring work of the statistical officer, Mr. T. H. Motson, the range officers, Messrs. C. H. Brook and W. H. L. Gosling other helpers and the energetic runners headed by Master Maurice Gosling. Ct. G. E. 'Weavers, of the local No. 1 Holding Battalion, proved himself champion of the meeting by making the fine score of 693 out of T possible 700 in the Class " A " open aggregate. Ill the competitions reserved for members of the Colchester R.C., the club captain, Mr. W. H. L. Gosling, had outstanding success in winning the " Bailey " Challenge Cup (club championship) and the Coi. Lockbum tankard, which is awarded to the competitor who has never previously won a club trophy.' M. Bands, vice-captain of the club, made the highest score in the young shots competition and there- 1 Young Shots " Cup for one year. The results of the other competitions were as follows A record entry of competitors was obtained at the meeting and the range was fully occupied the whole time. T h e D u n f e r m l i n e C l u b i s t o b e c o n g r a t u l a t e d o n . t h e w a y t h e meeting was nin and for all the preparatory work ihitt was necessary beforehand. This resulted in one of the finest meetings the Associa tion. had held up to date. The Association was greatly indebted to the 2nd Fife (Y.M.C.A.) Troop of Boy Scouts for the use of their marquee which was used for the benefit of competitors, and every rifleman at the meeting was high in their praise for the smartness and efficiency of the Scouts who acted as target runners under the leadership of Patrol Leader R. Gardiner, Jnr. Glamorgan R.A. The 19th annual small-bore rifle meeting of the above Association was held at Tondu Range on Saturday, 7th September, 1946. In spite of the unpleasant weather of the past week a good number of enthusiastic riflemen attended and took part in one of the most keenly contested meetings yet seen on the Tondu range. The shooting was done in the open air on a range which left little to be desired from the marksman's point of view, and, what is equally important, they were blessed with a fine day, little wind and good "^'^Competitions took place at 25, 50 and 100 yards, and some very good scores were put on at all of these ranges. The Dhotoeraoh shows Mrs. L. F. Sloane-Stanley presenting the Stamford Young ChallengeTrophy to the captain of the Ro?s team. Also in the plcwre are Mr. H. N. Braddell, Chairman of the Association, and Mr. A. C. Hoskms, secretary. A feature of the day's shooting was the triumph over all comers of young Arthur Williams of Cardiff City R.C. This brilliant young marksman of 16 scored an aggregate of 783 out of a highest possible score of 800, obtained by firing 30 shots at 25, 30 at 50, and 20 at 100 yards. His score included 100, three 99s, two 98s and 96, and a very un- duck y 9 4 . In the unlimited, Williams had an aggregate through the same ranges of 295 out of a possible 300, being third place to Ale.xander with 298, and his own father with 296—both of Cardiff City R.C. By his remarkable shoot Williams becomes the winner of the Glamorgan County Championship Cup and the G.R.A. Silver Medal and a money prize. The runner-up was G. D. F. Steward of Swansea R.C. with a score of 782, M. J. Williams of Mountain Ash, last year's winner, being third with a score of 780- Highest possibles were put on by S. Alexander, R. G. Elias, A. Williams and H. Williams (Cardiff City R.C.), I. L. Roberts (Swansea R.C.) and M. Williams (Mountain Ash R.C.). The Griffiths' Shield for Highest Team Aggregate was won again this year by Cardiff City R.C. with a score of 2,341. Te a m : S . A l e x a n d e r, H . W i l l i a m s , A . W i l l i a m s . The runners-up being Swansea R.C. B team ; score, 2,311. Herefordshire R.A. The first summer prize meeting of the Herefoidshire R.A., held at Bradbury Lines, Hereford, on Saturday and Sunday, 24th and 25th August, was a great success. Over 200 competitors took pait, 830 targets were shot in the various competitions, and the organisa tion was so good that the prizegiving took place a few minutes before the advertised time. Mr. J. B. Hutchinson, the vice-chairman, was the outstanding competitor, and he took the chief awards. It was interesting to note that women competitors were prominent. Miss KatWeen Weeks captained Painter's B in the championship final, and was top scorer for her side with 98. The brunt of the work fell on Mr. H. N. Braddell, the chairman, and Mr. A. C. Hoskins, the hon. secretary, but their efforts were enthusiastically backed by a hard-working body of officials. Mr. E. .1. Hawker, the county captain, was the chief range officer, and the chief statistical officer was Mr. F. J. Cockrell. , T h e o n l y d i s a p p o i n t i n g n o t e w a s struck at the prize distribution, when Mr. Braddell announced that that would the last occasion on which he would be present in an official capacity, as he is leaving the county. He said how much he had enjoyed his association with the miniature rifle clubs of the county, and congratulated all concerned on the suc cess of their first summer meeting. He was sure they would all agree that they m u s t b e e v e n m o r e a m b i t i o u s a n o t h e r year and have competitions at 50 and 100 yards. Mr. Braddell went on to pay a warm tribute to the work of Mr. Hoskins, and said the success achieved by the Associa tion was in a great measure due to his ef forts. The president (Lt.-Col. L. F. Sloane- Stanley, O.B.E.) spoke of the regret they all felt that Mr. Braddell was leaving the county, tuid said that though it was true that Mr. Hoskins had done e.xcellent Work it was also true that Mr. IJraddell had been an ideal chairman, and he shared in the triumph which had been achieved. The Committee had also worked well, and the result had been a highly success ful season, crowned by an opeir meeting which they had all enjoyed. Col. Sloane-Stanley then presented Mr. Braddell with a silver tankard, to the purchase of which all the clubs in the Association contributed. Mrs. Sloane-Stanley then preseiited the awards, and she afterwards received a bouquet from Miss K. Weeks, of Painter's Sports Club. Acknowledgments to the " Hereford Times.' Some of the best rifle shots in the North of England visited Hors- forth on the last week-end of August for the two-days' annual summer meet of the Association of Leeds'and District Rifle and Revolver Clubs at the Cragg Hill range. There was a record number of entries, including a number of women, and teams took part from Manchester, Sheffield, Harrogate, Rotherham, York, and other big centres. A high standard of shoot ing was seen, most marked, perhaps, in the final competition for the " Ridings' " trophy, won by the West Riding marksmen against North and East Ridings' teams. In Sunday's finals, G. F. Clyne carried off the championship of the meet, winning the Montague Burton Challenge Cup and gold medal. He also won The Yorkshire Post trophy and the Joshua Tetlcy Challenge Cup. He had previously won the championship award in 1943. Shelfield Police won the Yorkshire Police' A.A. Rifle Shooting championship and also the vice-presidents' challenge cup, while Harrogate R.C. caa ried off the Lord Mayor's Challenge Shield. Lieut.-Col. C. W. Mustill, M.B.E., presided'at the presentation ceremony, and the prizes were handed over by Brigadier J. N. Tetley, D.S.O., who described rifle shooting as " a very fine and great sport." He added that he would like to see rifle shooting established as part of the national life of the country Trophy winners were :— Leeds Postal Clerks' Challenge Cup, J. B. The trophy was presented to the captain of the winning team on behalf of the proprietors of the Nott ingham Guardian, together with two badges for those who had taken part in the county shoot and the second and third division medals to the members of the two teams. The meeting had to be completed next day owing to heavy rain making conditions almost irnpossible at 100 yards. However, fine scores were made by the winners of the various events. Three women competed and the wife of the winner of the novices' events showed good marksmanship. L. Carr (Carlton R.C.) won the main event, resisting a determined challenge by B. Pepper (Springfield R.C.), who finished one point behind. E. H. Haynes (Carlton R.C.) was third, two points away. Mr. Carr won the coveted aggregate prize by consistent shooting, but failed to secure first place in any of the " range events." C. Buxton (Carlton R.C.) began with a perfect " possible " at 100 yards, only to " lose a shot" at 50 yards, dropping 10 points and eliminating himself as a serious challenger to the eaders, but he won the range event for that distance. A. Brailsford (Mansfield and District R.C.) secured the 50 yards eveiH with another " possible," and Mr. Pepper (Springfield) scored a double " possible " at 25 yards to secure that range event. The novices' events were all won by Cpl. J. P. Shipley (Springfield), who finisiied 10 points ahead of L. Wardle and secured the new challenge trophy, the Carlton Cup, given by members of the Carlton club for annual competition. W. Hurt (Notts. Oxfordshire R.A. The Association held its annual small-bore outdoor rifle meeting at Wytham near Oxford on 21st July, when there was an excellent entry in excess of any received for meetings held prior to 1939. The entry for the indiviclual competition for the Lord Valentia Cup and Pageant Cup was 172 and 136 respectively, while the team com petitions attracted 22 teams in the Championship Trophy and 19 in the Saye and Sele Cup. The site for the range on ground kindly loaned by Mrs. fiennell was very satisfactory and the Association is deeply grateful for this help towards the meeting, as well as for the work done by the Range Officers under Mr. Pudsey Dawson, of the Berkshire M.R.A., and Mr. G. Barnes of the British Legion, Abing don, as statistical officer. Many, others helped in different ways to make the meeting possible by assisting in the preparation of the range and in clerical work in connection with the actual meeting. The leading scores and winners of the various prizes were :— Championship Trophy. Teams of six. This meeting following on the successful Summer League organised by the Association, when 43 teams competed under postal conditions, shows that there is plenty of interest in rifle shooting in the County. Therefore, a good entry for the Association's Winter League, which is due to commence on 7th October, is expected. The great need in the County is for more indoor ranges for winter shooting, and a really good outdoor range giving facilities up to 100 yards. As there is now no service rifle range in the whole of Oxfordshire, it seems more important than ever to try and help the small-bore shot. (Col.) R. F. Symonds, Hon. Secretary. Scottish R.A. Two small-bore riflemen took the leading individual prizes at Cambuslang. , ^ Capt. A. Eccles, late 5th Seaforths, won the Scottish rifle shooting championship with 166 points. He tied with Lieut. G. F. Booth, London, and in the shoot-off Capt. Eccles had three inners to his opponent's two inners and a magpie. A well-known international shot, Capt. Eccles has been trying for the Scottish championship for the past 20 years. A native of Sutherland, he has lived in England for a number of years, and is a well-known figure at shooting competitions at Bisley and formerly at S.M.R.C. meetings. Mr. G. F. The first event of the season to be organised by the re-formed small-bore section was a Staffordshire Towns Competition for which nine entries were received. The competition was fired at 25 yards and the four leading teams in the first- stage competed in the final on Sunday, 14th July, at the Walsall Municipal Rifle Range. A cold wind blew throughout the afternoon and conditions were such that no competitor succeeded in scoring a "possible" and there were only two 99's. Shooting between the first two teams was veiy keen and Stoke-on-Trent finally beat their neighbours, New- castle-undep-Lyme, by three points. Tributes were paid to Captain Kennard, formerly honorary president of the Stirlingshire S.B.R.A. at the third annual presenta tion of prizes to winning teams of the Association held in the Tem perance Cafe recently. Mr. William Hobson, who presided, said that Captain Kennard, who had now retired from the Falkirk district, had given the Association his fullest support for upwards of 20 years, and there was no doubt that he would be missed. Colonel William Forbes, of Callendar, who was to present the prizes that evening, had, however, agreed to take Captain Kennard's place, and he assured the colonel that the support he would give woald raise the spirit of endeayour of the Association to retain the trophies they already, held and to aspire after others. Ccplonel Forbes, in the course of his remarks, said that rifle- shooting fostered a fine team spirit. There could be no doubt that, apart from the great satisfaction accruing from skill in the sport, there was built up by team shooting a co-operative endeavour which was an excellent thing in community life. He was proud to take the place of Captain Kermard, and hoped that he would have oppor tunity to furthei the interest of small-bore rifle-shooting in the county and that the Falkirk Lord Roberts Club would continue to hold for a third year the News of the World Cup which they had already h e l d f o r t w o . Provost Stiachan, addressing the gathering, said it was a good thing that there was a rifle-shooting team in the town. He thought the small-bore rifle clubs were doing a great service to the community, in particular in regard to the appeal they made to thck youth of the country. He hoped that the Falkirk Lord Roberts Club would continue its successful career, and that next year they would win the individual as well as the team trophy presented by the News of the World. Falkirk had held these trophies in the past, and he thought they could win them again. Mr. George M'Laren, C.B.E., J.P., Convener of the County of Stirling, who also spoke, said he would like to associate himself with the remarks in appreciation of Captain Kennard. He had known the Captain for many years and had worked beside him. He congratu lated the Provost of Falkirk on having such a fine team to represent the town, but said that he thought that the Stirling teams would give them stiffer competition in the future. Be that as it might, the county, as a whole, had proved that it could hold its own against every other county in Great Britain. He hoped, in the interests of youth, that there would be an extension of the sport of rifle-shooting. Some form of organisation was necessary in the formative years of youth, and what better sport and organisation could they have than that pro vided by small-bore shooting? Mr. T. Walker, Alloa, Scottish agent of the S.M.R.C., also addressed the gathering. During the evening an enjoyable programme of entertainment was sustained by Miss Jessie Wilson, of Falkirk Operatic Society, who sang " Pipes of Pan " and " Westering Home " ; Mr. James Grant, who sang " Veomen of England " and " Hurrah for the Highlands" ; and Mr. James Niven, who gave selected readings. T H E R I F L E M A N 41 Surrey County S.B.R.A. The Surrey Small-bore Rifle Association has much pleasure in announcing that Lord Mancroft has consented to become their president. " Lt.-Coi. Lord Mancroft, M.B.E., lives at 48, Montagu Square, Marble Arch, London, W. 1, and his father. Sir Arthur Samuel, Bt., M.P., sat for 20 years as the member for a Surrey Constituency (Famham, Woking, Camberley) and was for many years Senior County Member. He is thus carrying on a long association with the County, and as he is e.xtremely interested in shooting matters and all movements such as ours we take the opportunity to congratulate Surrey on acquiring such a helpful President. The Surrey Open Meeting in 1945 with its entry of 356 competitors and prize list of £180 was a record achievement for any Courity meeting which many regarded as incidental to the glamour that the first real county meeting after six years of total war held and one unlikely to be repeated when the novelty had worn off. Whether it be the attraction of Ham and Petersham, the success of last year, the lure of the new Classification System, originally recommended by Canada in The Rifleman and initiated by Surrey, combined with a good prize list to all classes, or the long programme and its team events, Surrey are proud to report that they have done it again. This year, favoured by an entry of 405 competitors over the two days of the 21st and 22nd July, a total of 5,400 cards were shot and the published prize list of £86 was increased by £75. Adding to this the value of unlimited entry money returned and the value of medals and prizes in kind the total prize money becomes £250. With such an entry it was inevitable that accommodation on the 50 and 100 yard ranges became taxed to its utmost on the Sunday afternoon and at times the waiting list was 75 to 80 long. For this reason the committee decided to e.ttend shooting until 8 p.m., forego the prize distribution and finally abandon the Sharpshooter event. Those interested in statistics will find some consolation that the officials and target runners did their best when they were told that the average detail works out at 11 minutes assuming the range at Ham (75 targets) was filled for every detail every moment of the meeting. , , . . Surrey are proud to announce that the extensive prize list was prepared and posted to all member clubs and individual members or entrants within a week of the meeting, and hope to have the prize money distributed before this notice goes to press. Details of leading prize-winners follows for all to study and be on record In our journal as an effort to encourage all other counties to do even better. It is surely a healthy sign of the attraction that small-bore shooting holds and a pointer towards the service that a live County Association can give, which others will not be slow to recognise, and we hope, encourage the manufacturers to see that no effort is lost or stone left unturned which will help our members to obtain the supplies and equipment they have waited so patiently to get. We thank everyone for coming, we congratulate all the winners, we wish the losers better luck next year when we hope to see all again To Surrey clubs and members we draw attention to the fact that we expect to get our winter programme out as soon as possible and we are anxious to build up a strong and representative pistol shooting side to our activity. It was to have been my privilege to have presented the prizes at this meeting, but as you all know the entry exceeded all expecta tions and the demands on time for shootmg forced the Association t o f o r e g o t h i s e v e n t . , , . , ^ Over very many years I have always regarded the Surrey Open Meeting as an epoch in the shooting calendar and the success this year following our record meeting in 1945 shows me that Suney is not only blessed with officials and a committee who can get things done better than ever before, but they have obtained the goodwill and support of riflemen everywhere. There is no doubt that small-bore rifle shooting is gaming popu larity and my duty cannot end without thanking you one and all for vour attendance and support. It is not out of place to draw your attention to the vast amount of work that goes into a meeting of this sort and the splendid service rendered by Mr. Tucknott, Mr. Gilbert, Mr. Sanders, the committee and last but not least the ladies who have worked so hard. I should like to congratulate all the winners, particularly Middlesex for their victories in the Marks Shield and Pistol Events, although we hope to regain the former next year. In conclusion, I trust your enjoyment of this meeting will bring even greater numbers to our meeting in 1947. T. J . Sussex County S.B.R.A. The County S.B.R.A. held their annual open meeting at Lancing on the 17th-18th August, 1946. The meeting was a great success and was without doubt the largest meeting ever held in Sussex. It was held in the Junior School Playing Fields quite close to Lancing station and although the conditions on the first day were not too kind the following day (Sunday) was almost perfect weather. Some very fine shooting and good scores were recorded and the 170 entrants were unanimous in their praises with the conditions, situation, prizes and most important of all, the running of the meeting. Theit is little doubt that the new classification method in grading the entrants A, B, C and D was instrumental in getting so many keen shots to attend as the predominant entry was in Classes B and C. It is very hard to find sufficient praise for the work put in by the hon. secretary, Mr. G. M. Munro, to whom most of the credit for the success of the mating should go and he was actively supported by a very live com mittee who shouldered their responsibilities like veterans. It is hoped that this meeting will be the fbrenmner of many more. Results were :— " Sutton " Gold Cup Competition.—1 E. J. G. Bull, Southwick (£2 2s.), 685 ; 2 R. A. Secretary would like to take this opportunity of thanking the following members, who are not officers of the Association, for their very valuable services at and before the meeting : Messrs. Tong, Hoare, Anderson, Baker, Stone, Yool and A. E. Bowden. Others who kindly assisted aie also'thanked. The Sussex County S.B.R.A. statement of account shows that they finished the year with a balance in hand of £120 3s. lOd., and as they started from scratch last year it is a matter for congratulation to meir committee and officers for this very satisfactory state. They are lortunate in having some very good friends, as will be seen from the list of donations. Even so the expenses of running an Association are heavy if it is to do its work properly. Of course, they had their troubles, inasmuch as they ran a dance at Hove which was an expensive failure. This was because of lack of support of members, but the situation was partly retrieved by a dance held at Petworth by Mr. Standen which resulted in a cheque to the Association for £18. There are 54 clubs affiliated to the Association and 76 teams took part in the Winter League which was a great success. The " Lawson," Loder, and " Choose your own Start " competitions helped along the funds and through the good work put in by the Secretary in running a Derby sweepstake they were able to add another £45 to their balance. They may safely consider the S.C.S.B.R.A. now to be well established financially. G. M. Munro, Hon. Secretary. Wiltshire M.R.A. Marksmen from all over the county gathered at King's Playdown Range, near Devizes, on Saturday, 27th June, for the small-bore prize meeting, organised by the Wilts County M.R.A. The weather was almost perfect, and about 100 competitors took part, some carrying away trophies as a reward for their shooting, and all bearing a reminder of a well-spent day in the shape of stm-tanned faces and hands. All agreed that the meeting had gone off smoothly and satisfactorily, and that a most successful start had been made after a war-time lapse of seven years. In the unavoidable absence of the president (Col. W. Llewellen Falmer) the awards and money prizes were presented by Col. A P fofthe Avon-Valley Club. Introducing him, Mr. R. Keller, ot Trowbridge, said he would like first to thank those responsible tor the smooth ruiming of the meeting, especially the Chief Statistical Officer, Mr. A. L. Hardy, the Chief Range Officer, Mr. W. W. Hol- l^d, and the .Hon. Secretary, Mr. A. C. Millington; also Mr. C. Rossiter for supplying the target-frames at very short notice, and last but by no means least the Boy Scouts from Devizes, who had given invaluable help with the targets. Trowbridge teams carried off a number of trophies as a result xf A shooting and of the prize meeting. Trowbridge N.A.L.G.O. won the Wiltshire Times Cup, the Kynoch knock-out ^leld and the splendid " Marquess of Lansdowne " Shield while Trowbndge Police A won the County Cup. The twelfth annual match between teams of the Yorkshire and Oregon Associations has again provided a win for the U.S.A. team, who made the fine score of3,940, the second highest score the American team has made in the series of matches fired. Yorkshire with a score of 3,914 recorded their highest score since 1938 and is their third highest score made in the series. Yorkshire &ed their match on the range of the Leeds Association and were favoured with ideal conditions. The well-known rifleman, Mr. W. J. Favoured with three days of fine weather, the meeting proved a happy one for the renewal of old friendships, and the introduction of many new comers, who soon proved there was some fine shots among them. Mr. T. Kennedy, Leeds, proved a most efficient C.R.O., while the statistical department was in the capable hands of Mr. G. F. Clyne, Bradford. Mr. W. McCloud, of Hull, as Hon. Prize Meeting Secre tary, is deserving of congratulations the way the meeting was carried out. ■ Leading results :— Competition No 1. The " B.S.A." challenge cup.—1 T. J. An interesting feature of the Yorkshire team was that every member has shot in the Cbunty rifle team. Willerby H.G. O.C.A. R.C. held a contest at their range in Great Gutter Lane. Officials at the rifle meeting were G. O. Whitehead and W. McCloud (range officers) ; C. L. Hardy (scrutineer) ; J. Earnshaw and G. F. Grassby (records) ; T. W. Mackrill (treasurer) ; and A. B.
