KEIGHLEY BOYS WIN NATIONAL CONTEST The success of the Keighlcy Squadron in the S.M.R.C. com petition open to A.T.C. squadrons was publicly recognised on Sunday, 19th May, at 2.45 p.m., when Air Vice-Marshal Sir Alan Lees, Chief Commandant and Director General of the A.T.C., fulfilled his first public engagement since his appointment and visited Keighley to present the " Battle of Britain " trophy. The gift of Major John H. Smith, of KidUngton Hall, Lincoln, this handsome silver cup, together with eight silver replicas, was won by Keighley from an entry of 144 teams of ten, by a margin of five points. Teams No. 1179 (Selby) Squadron, and No. 1016 (Berwick-on-Tweed) Squadron, fourth and fifth respectively, also attended the ceremony and received bronze medals. The R.A.F. invariably attached a great deal of importance to rifle-shooting and put everyone through a course in order to make them projectile and rifle-minded, he said. He hoped that some day a boy from the Keighicy team would win the King's Prize at Bisley. TO W N C O N G R A T U L A T E D Air Vice-Marshal Sir Alan Lees said that the silver replicas and bronze medals had been presented by the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs. It was his hope that next year there would be between five and six hundred team entries instead of 144, and he would like to see Keighley repeat their success in forthcoming competitions. He congratulated North-Eastern Command of the A.T.C. in having three teams among the leading prize winners, and e,\pressed his pleasure that in the first six teams were representatives of Britain's four countries. Miniature rifle shooting was a pastime that was well worth while, he said. Receiving the trophy on behalf of his squadron, Flight-Lieutenant Stokes said that day marked a signal honour for the A.T.C. in Keigh ley. The inscription upon the cup, " Never before in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few," those words of Mr. Churchill's, which would always be remembered, r e c a l l e d t h e d a r k d a y s o f 1 9 4 1 . When Keighley entered for the contest they hoped to put up a good show, and when they finished third in the preliminary rounds he felt they had done very well indeed. He told the musketry team so and said, " What about being first in the finals ? " And the boys put just a bit more skill into their shooting than ever they had done before. OTHER SUCCESSES Not only had the musketry team brought honour to their squadron, which had excelled in other branches of training—in aircraft recogni tion and physical training—and was unbeaten at football during the past season. Flight-Lieutenant Stokes expressed thanks on behalf of the squadron to Sir Alan for coming to Keighley to make the presen tation, and wished him a successful term of office in the post-war development of the A.T.C. A vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Ellis Ratcliffe, a member of the civilian committee, who referred to the civic dignity which the Mayor and Town Clerk added to the occasion, and the distinction which Sir Alan had accorded Keighley by inspecting the squadron and making the presentations. He also extended thanks to the officers and warrant officers who had trained the cadets. The cadets had displayed wonderful discipline, and would be filled with that comrade ship and character which would make them really good citizens. He could not look upon that cup and remember its title without thinking of those brave men of the R.A.F. They must have had in their hearts and minds those words of Scott: " Breathes there a man with soul so dead, who never to himself hath said, this is my own, m y n a t i v e l a n d .
