WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UK186 T H E R I F L E M A N . April, 1919. N O T E S A N D C O M M E N T S , The entries for the Queen Alexandra's Cup Competition are far below expectations and only total about the same figure as last year, 1,400. The targets for the first round have been issued and must be shot and returned to the S . M . R . C . o n o r b e f o r e t h e 2 2 n d i n s t . * * * The Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs extremely 1 egret to announce that in reply to their application for reduced fares for railway travelling to and from their Open Meetings to be held at Ham and Petersham June 6-14 and Cleethorpes August 6-9, the following letter has been received :— Railway Executive Committee, Board of Trade, 35, Parliament Street, We s t m i n s t e r , S . W . i . March iSth, igi(j. With reference to your letter of the 12th inst., addressed to the Railway Clearing House, asking whether the Railway Companies can issue reduced fare tickets to members of the affiliated Clubs attending the Meetings mentioned in your letter. I have to say that the matter has been considered but I regret to inform you the way is not seen to re-introduce the special concession during the current year. Yo u r s f a i t h f u l l y. Signed for GILBERT S. SLUMBER, Secretary. Although competitions will not have the benefit of reduced fares as formerly it is hoped that the attendance of riflemen from distant towns will not be seriously af fected. * # * The London League Competition having proved such an unqualified success during the past two years, the majority of clubs have decided to again compete. On this occasion twelve teams have entered against eleven last year and ten in 1917, comprising nine of last year's contestants, two new entries in Eltham and Erith, while Alexandra Palace, the winners in 1917, rejoin. It is regretted that the Ham and Petersham have been com pelled to fall out. The shooting will again take place at each of the 25, 50 and 100 yards ranges and the teams composed of six competitors. The first match has to be shot on or before April 20 and the others at fortnightly intervals extending until September 14. By a peculiar coincidence in both the previous competitions the team making the highest aggregate score has only been able to obtain the second position in the league table at the end of the season, but on this occasion it is hoped that the team making the most consistent shooting will obtain premier honours. * * * On page 182 full particulars will be found of the S.M.R.C. Team Championship Competition, the entries for which close on May 12 next. As this is the only open competi tion promoted by the Society which is shot for over the three ranges of 25, 5° yards, all clubs possessing such range accommodation as regards distance should avail themselves of this opportunity of providing a very inter esting competition for their members. The rules of the Volunteer and Territorial Accident Fund have recently been amended to permit the insurance against accidents of members of rifle clubs. This should prove a very acceptable privilege to our members who may wish to have additional insurance against risk whilst on the range. Full particulars can be obtained from the Secretary, 9, King's Bench Walk, Temple, London, E.C.4. » * * All members of Affiliated Rifle Clubs over the age ot 60 years are reminded that the S.M.R.C. Veterans' Competi tion will again be compfeted for this year. Full conditions will be published in our May issue. The entries will close on June 16 next, and the targets must be shot between that date and July 7. * * * The shooting in the National Team Championship still maintains its high standard, and in the second round no less than 20 clubs returned scores of 580 and over. The Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport, are again at the head of the list with a most excellent score of 592, whilst the Ellengowan (Dundee) improved upon their first round score by 2 points, making 589. * * * The Metropolitan Mayor's Committee have decided to re-commence this year the Competition for the Inter- Borough Challenge Cup. The conditions will be the same as previously and the targets for the first stage will be shot during the month of May, June and July, whilst the final, which will be competed for by the four teams making the highest aggregate scores in the three monthly shoots of the first stage, will take place on the range of the Mansfield (Highgate) Rifle Club, on Saturday, August 9th next. * * * The B.S.A. Coy. have informed us that their No 12 Model Martini rifles will be ready at the end of July. Many orders from affiliated clubs have already been booked by us, and we advise an early application. The price will be each. SOCIETY OF Mir^IATURE RIFLE CLUBS. T H E R I F L E M A N . 1 8 3 T H E S M A L L A R M I N * I ""HE future role of the small-arm in aerial warfare is I a subject which is much under discussion now. It A may be that our target shooting practice should be brought into line with the new conditions which now obtain. There is much to be done to develop aerial marksmanship, and it is interesting to know what the immediate future steps in improvement will be. As the war, which is now nearing its conclusion, pro- .gressed, so the armaments of aircraft were developed and special small ordnance was invented and applied, as well, of course, as preventive measures against them. This was all, in the nature of things, hastily done, and so there is much in the way of improvement to be accomplished in the future. There was a time when our aeroplanes had to take the air to meet the enemy armed with nothing but the Lee-Enfield, and many of our aviators have given us some interesting experiences regarding the unpreparedness in which we found ourselves in many an aerial combat. Of coi.rse, there has been no lack of training on the part of our aerial gunners, who have shown themselves in the great war, now happily behind us to all intents and purposes, to be fighters without equal in many a hard- fought struggle away up in the skies. How^ever this may be, there remains a great deal to do for the marksmanship training of our fighting airmen of the future, because the conditions have altered rapidly during the war, and they will alter still more rapidly as time goes on. The aerial target is becoming an extremelj" difficult one, as many a fighter of our fiying services is able to assure us. In the earlier days of the war this was not so. The aviator was not so enclosed in the machine, nor pro- ected as he is to-day. No special endeavour was made o ncle Ins body, and he sat in his 'plane an easy mark for almost the humblest shot. Again, the machine, except tot stays and necessarily strong parts, was made of material easily penetrated by bullets. These circumstances are now greatly altered. The aerial fighter is almost completely protected against attack. He is covered in by armour plate—or, at any rate, sheet steel —thin but strong, and he presents but a poor mark to his •opponent. Undoubtedly an armour-piercing bullet must be the ammunition for attack in the ammunition of future aerial small-arm equipment. Under the new conditions which are in force it is easy to see what we are up against in training the aerial marks men of the future. We have now a target which, in difficulty of attack, can scarcely be likened to anything which target shooting, as we know it on the rifle range, has developed so far. Our rifle ranges—perhaps even the modest miniature rifle club ranges of the town and village—will now have to introduce new competitions to keep abreast with the latest developments. So far in rifle-target practice we have produced tar gets, disappearing targets, etc., but we have nothing yet to equal or include all the conditions of travelling target, travelling aiming point, and all the many other factors "which enter into, and complicate, the aerial marksmanship problem. The aerial gunner has, of course, had practice on the iines indicated already, and we know that many men have AERIAL W ARF ARE. become extremely expert in their particular line ; but we a r e c o n c e r n e d f o r t h e m o m e n t a s t o t h e m a n n e r i n w h i c h this target practice can be developed and our rifle clubs and ranges used for the purpose. Just as the battle range a t s e a h a s i n c r e a s e d f r o m t h e h a n d - t o - h a n d t u s s l e o f Nelson's time to the 10,000-yard (and more) gunnery duel, so the distance at which fighting aircraft of the future will carry out their attack will increase. The small-arm used will also be of greater power. And so the difficulties of aerial marksmanship will grow rapidly. A little consideration serves to give us some idea of the features of any new competition devised to meet the purpose in view. As aerial enemy meets enemy there is the preliminary and ever-after wards present problem of r a n g e - fi n d i n g a n d m a n o e u v r i n g f o r p o s i t i o n . A s t h e machines approach, so there are diving and "stunting " to contend with, and the aerial combatants present to one another a steel-enclosed front, with but little or nothing of a human or vital target disclosed. The ballistic considerations are very complex in their nature. For instance, there is the tenuity, or gradual thinning of the atmosphere with height. As the aviator ascends in the air, so the atmosphere becomes more and more rarified. At 4,000 feet the air is reduced in density by about one-eighth, and, in the neighbourhood of 12,000 feet, it is almost halved in density. In earlier days, which still do not seem any time away, the aerial gunner had a mark of reasonable size, and a detail of this kind would perhaps not count for much ; but to-day, with his target continually diminishing to almost infinitesimal proportions, and the fighting range increasing, maybe it is of vital concern. Again to mention but one other little item which grows in importance in a similar way to that of the one just mentioned, there is the fraction of time that ensues between the action of pulling the trigger and the blow of the hammer on the cartridge cap. This is indeed a small detail, but with a target and firing point both moving laterally at different speeds, perhaps, and in no certain direction, it becomes a matter which may have great and deleterious effects upon good marksmanship. Clearly we have in the Third Arm an important field in which to develop small-arm shooting, and where the inventor has great scope in which to bring his faculties into play. It will be of interest to watch the develop m e n t s w h i c h a r e a l m o s t c e r t a i n t o b e m a d e — a n d m a d e rapidly—in the direction indicated.
