< Previous164 T H E R I F L E M A N . the curvature of the bullet's path ahd the latter respon sible for the loss of speed of the bullet. We see what a powerful medium the atmosphere is in retarding the bullet, and it opens our eyes to its power when we read that but for its presence the Service bullet is capable of traversing an e.xtreme range of nothing less than 35 miles. To the reader of mechanical bent the determination of muzzle velocity and maximum pressure in the manu facture of rifles and cartridges described in Chapter IX. will specially appeal. Robins' simple ballistic pendulum consisting of a bob hanging from a tripod is illustrated' and explained, and the simple device introduced by Mr. Mallock, F.R.S., which still permits of the Robins' pendu lum being used in up-to-date determinations of bullet velocities is described. So, too, we have explained the ingenious Boulenge Chronograph which brings into use electricity. Chapter X. explains the elements of the trajectory, and proceeds to the calculation of the range and time of flight of the bullet from first principles, an easy and exceedingly attractive little problem for the budding ballistician. In Chapter XL-we are introduced to ballistic tables and their use in the calculation of trajectories, and the high-sounding titles given to the tables of numbers in the book lose their fearfulness in the simple exposition of their construction which is given. Various problems and their solution by means of the .tables are given in the following chapter. " Rifle fire against aerial targets " is dealt with in the next chapter, the caption to which is an extract from one of Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig's despatches of O- 27th September, 1917 : " Five hostile machines were brought down by the fire of our infantry." It is seen that the rifle and machine-gun are not without their use in meeting the attacks of the third arm. The effect of wind on the bullet is dealt with in Chapter XIV., and Chapter XV. is devoted to the interesting and practical application of theory in the graduation of rifle sights, the allowance for varying atmo spheric conditions, correction for motion of the target across the line of fire, etc. Chapter XVI. is concerned with the accuracy of rifle fire and explains how match targets for rifles and ammunition are constructed, or should be constructed. The final chapter is devoted to a description and explanation of the si.x-point rest and Ommundsen's negative angle sight. A frontispiece, consisting of a photograph of a bullet in flight, taken by Professor C. V. Boys, F.R,S., ,is particu larly well reproduced. The photograph was taken with an exposure of one twelve-millionth of a second and shows with startling clearness the air waves and eddies caused by the bullet. A copious index is added and adds greatly to the value of the book. As a word of reference we have little hesitation in recommending the book as an invaluable addition to the library of the keen rifle shot and the rifle club. The book is well printed, is handsomely bound in stout cloth-boards, and is a complete and handy encyclopedia of the science of the rifle. The price is five shillings net, and it may be purchased of the S.M.R.C., of any bookseller, or direct from the publishers, Messrs. Charles Griffin & Co., 12, Exeter Street, Strand, W.C.2. T H E R I F L E M A N . 1C)5 N O T E S A N D C O M M E N T S . .All riflemen are reminded that the entries for the Queen Alexandra's Cup Competition close on the 31st inst. For the past three years the entries have been very poor, but now that the majority of clubs are welcoming back most of their old members from war sersice, it is hoped that this competition will again receive the consideration it deserves. * * * All clubs will, without doubt, welcome the arrival of -a consignment of American ammunition, and we are pleased to be able to announce that we now have some for sale, as advertised in another part of this journal. Prices, Iiowever, are exceedingly high, and this is partly due to the 85 per cent, increase in dock charges amongst other causes. Whilst expecting an increase in price, we did not anticipate it to be quite so large. We advise those clubs who cannot afford the price to use the " Eley " brand for practice, or the teaching of novices, and the higher priced ammunition for matches and competitions. It must be admitted that we have had complaints of bad patches of the Government " E " Long Rifle Smokeless, which we sell at the low price of 17s. per 1,000, but we have also had many good reports. Apparently its effec ti ve n ess va ri es w i th th e ki nd of ri fle i n w hi ch i t i s used. Our experience is that it requires a strong and broad pointed striker and many clubs have forwarded their rifles to us for such adjustment. The advent of fresh American brands of ammunition provides the crack shot with an expensive but, we hope, reliable cartridge, and. In view of the London Meeting at Whitsuntide, such assurance is most necessary at the present time. Many of our members possibly overlooked the fact that up to quite recently there was a Government embargo against the importation of foreign ammunition. Unfortunately for miniature marksmen its relaxation is now only tem porary and it is possible that it will shortly be replaced. Therefore we advise club secretaries to carefully go into the matter of impending requirements and order early. Tf * * The " A " team of the Brighton and Hove Imperial Rifle Club put up a remarkable performance recently when shooting their match against the Saunders Rifle Club in the Brighton and Hove Rifle League. The team was composed of six riflemen, each shooting ten shots deliberate at 23 yards at a ten-bull target, and each member of the team scored 98, whilst the total 588 stands as a record score for the League, which has now been running for some 3ears past. * * * The shooting in the first round of the Mackworth-Praed was very moderate, the best score being 757 by the ■" B " Co. (Arbroath) 4th Black AA'atch, one of the teams \\ ho took part recently in the final round of the B.S.A. Competition. By the luck of the draw for the second round this team is now called upon to again meet their late opponents (the Stourbridge Co., ist Worcester), who beat them in the match referred to, and this match should produce a battle royal as there is very little difference between the abilities of the respective teams. * * * Considerable delay has been caused recently in the postal competitions run by the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs on account of clubs not returning their targets within the prescribed time, and club secretaries are reminded that their teams will be liable for disqualifica tion unless this rule is strictly adhered to. In cases when clubs intend to scratch to their opponents, if a notification to the S.M.R.C. was given, a lot of this delaj' could be avoided. * * « ■ An extraordinary target was shot recently on the range of the Upper Tooting Rifle Club by the Brothers C. and G . The credit of making the highest total belongs to the Rov-al Naval Barracks, Devonport, who only dropped 11 points from the possible 600, with Alexandra Palace 588 and Ellengowan 587. * * * T h e s e c o n d r o u n d o f t h e " N e w s o f t h e W o r l d " C o m petition produced some of the finest shooting which has been put up for some years past in any competition which included a rapid or time-limit target, while the scores of most of the teams were some points better. The best score was 1,164 out of'a possible 1,200 by the Alexandra Palace team (the winners of the cup in 1914, 1915 and 1916), whilst other scores which were above the average were Wimbledon Park, 1,154; Cheam, 1,148; Addis- combe, 1,142; Heston, 1,139; hee, 1,137. * * * The Cheam Rifle Club, who have never been favoured with any luck in the S.M.R.C. competitions, have beaten all records this season, being drawn against the Alexandra Palace R.C. in the third round of both the National Team Championship and the " News of the World ".Competi tions. Whatever the result of these matches prove to be, it will spoil the chance of one of the strongest London t e a m s g e t t i n g i n t o t h e fi n a l o f e i t h e r o f t h e s e comi>etitions. * * * I n v i e w o f t h e u n c e r t a i n f u t u r e o f t h e Vo l u n t e e r m o v e ment, our friends throughout the country can help both us and the Volunteers by suggesting and influencing their transition to civilian rifle clubs. Co.'s Turnham Green Garage, passed away on the i8th February owing to heart failure, following influenza. Since 1915 he took a very keen interest in rifle shooting and has held the championship and aggregate cups for the past three years in addition to many other club trophies. He won a life membership of S.M.R.C. in open competition with a score of 298 out of a possible 300, and also took part in the Marks' Shield Special Constabulary Competition. He was a good all-round sport, keen and clean cricket and football enthusiast, always turning up when most wanted, and his loss will leave a blank in our ranks. The funeral took place on Monday, February 24th, at which the Commander and all the officers of the L.G.O.C. Special Constabulary attended and paid their last respects. * * * The L.G.O.C. Rifle League is making steady progress, Mr. Hatt, of Chelverton Road, Putney, scoring the first possible that has been made by any member of the club at that garage. It is interesting to note that prior to 1915 not more that five per cent, of the members had done any rifle shooting. The annual meeting- of the Faneham R.C. was held at the Railway Hotel on Thursday in last week. The President (Mr. H. F. Rawstornc, J.P., C.C.) occupied the chair, and there were also present the Rev. C. L. Arnold, M.A., Mrs. Quarry, Gen. Merchant, Messrs. L. Warner, S R. N. Bradly, M.A., A. G. Vimpany, H. E. Sutton, F. Matthews, A. Blackman, J.P., H. Tatford, L. Shilling, A. J. Driver, J. H. Drewitt, A. John stone, J. H. Darby, A. Gale, J. Norris-Evans, H. Clark (Hon. Treasurer), B. R. Wilson, and others. I'he Chairman said that their first duty was a sad one. The club had a very severe loss to deplore in the death of their late iSecretary, Mr. H. J. Ed m u n d s , w h o w a s r e a l l y t h e creator of the club. It was due to the interest he took in it and the constant attention he bestowed t h a t t h e c l u b w a s n o w i n t h e position of owning its range and building free of all debt. They all knew how much he con tributed both in money and time, and they knew how ready he was at all times to instruct and help the members. During the war the ordinary work of the ■dub had been interrupted and Mr. Edmunds devoted his time largely to the instruction in rifle shoot- ing of those who were about to use their knowledge in the direct defence of their country, and much assistance had been given to them in this direction. They •svould have that night to consider what steps would be taken to ar range for a continuation of Mr. Edmunds' work, but it seemed an impossible task to find anyone who would be able to adequately fill the blank which his death had created. He remembered at a former meeting saying that Mr. Edmunds was himself the F.R.C. and one felt that still more now that he was no longer with them ; but they should, out of regard for all he did for the club, be all the more determined that the good work he had accomplished ■should, in future, be successfully continued. He moved that the meeting express thqir deep sym pathy with the brothers and sis ters and other relatives of the late M r. E d m u n d s a n d t h a t a l e t t e r •of condolence be addressed to t h e m f r o m t h e m e m b e r s o f t h e c l u b . M r . W a r n e r s e c o n d e d t h e rnotion, which was unanimously adopted, all present standing. The Chairman then said that the next matter on the agenda was the presentation of the balance s h e e t . A s t h e m e m b e r s w e r e aware, the club range was now free of debt, having been built at a cost of about ;^i57 in all. They would observe that the balance at the bank on December 31st, 1917, was ;^22 I2S. lod., while on December 21st last it was ;^26 ss. 4d., so that thev w e r e s o m e b e t t e r o f f . T h e subscriptions for igi8 amounted to .^11 OS. fid. They would have to make an effort to increase t h e a m o u n t o f t h e s e , f o r h e gathered that further expenditure on rifles would be necessary, and they would probably have to face further e.xpense in the matter of attendance at the range, for they could hardly expect to find any one able to expend so much time gratuitously as the late Mr. Ed m u n d s d i d . T h e b a l a n c e s h e e t having been adopted, it was pro posed seconded, and unanimously agreed to, that Mr. Ra-wstorne be re-e lect ed P resident f or t he current year. In returning thanks for the honour again con ferred on him, the President re marked that, so far as he could recollect, the last annual meeting took place in July, 1917, so that t h e y h a d m o r e t h a n t h e u s u a l year to look back upon. .■\s the war proceeded there were fewer men who were in a oosition to make use of the range, and he thought they all became more and m o r e a b s o r b e d i n v a r i o u s w a r work, while latterly, owing to the absence, through illness and subsequent death, of Mr. Ed munds, the range had not been in use, but now that peace was happily in sight, though not actually reached, they might hope there would be more men about, and that it would be possible to r e - o p e n t h e r a n g e , i f o n l y o n certain nights in the week to b e g i n w i t h . M o s t o f t h e m h a d been too much occupied owing to all the extra duties arising from the war to pay full attention to the range, but he hoped as things settled down they might get new members added, and perhaps the Boy Scouts might have to learn rifle shooting as part oftheir con tinuation schooling in the future, for even if the League of Nations effected all that was hoped of it, he could not help thinking it would still be a desirable accom- plishment to learn how to handle a r i fl e . T h e V i c e - P r e s i d e n t s w e r e re-elected, with the addition of Major-General Sir J. H. David son, C.B., D.S.O., M.P., General Marchant, Messrs. L. W arner and S. R. N. Johnstone, A. J. Driver, and A. S. Gale. It was also unani mously resolved, on the motion of Mr. Darby, seconded by Mr. Sutton, that Mr. Wooldridge be appointed Captain of the club. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the meeting. Lieut.-Col. H. D. Brook, who had always taken great interest in the club, wrote ; " I hope the club will go on and prosper. It has done a great work during the war, and should still be useful. I share in the club's grief over the loss of our devoted and be loved Secretary (Mr. Edmunds) and trust we shall be able to find an able successor ." Waring and Gillow R.C. The fourth annual meeting of the above club was held in the Market Hall Cof fee Tavern on Monday evening, January 20th, 1919, Mr. A. Hope in the chair. The first shoot for same took place on May 25th last, when six teams took part, the 13th Troop (St. Peter's) proving the winners with a score of 377 points, gaining the trophy by 7S points. In addition to this the Chairman of the club, Lieutenant-Colonel Elliston, again kindly gave monev prizes to the value of 35s., which was fired for by individuals, and the winners very kindly donated to the club fu nds. In their report the Directors comment as under : " With regard to members' shoots, it has been im possible to organise any during the past year, but as lately several of the lady members have shown an inclination to restart their shooting, it is hoped that this season will see a revival of medal and certificate competitions but whether this will prove feasible or not. by keeping "the club alive for the benefit of its bov members we are, I venture to think, raising a small but lasting memorial to our late President, Field-Marshal Earl Roberts. Its foundation is already laid, as many of our old lads serving with "h.M.
