In a short sp-ch he mentioned that nearly 300 members of the West Ham Nadonal Reserve were sen ing their country and regretted that a number had given their lives. The club was being carried on by a MEKTTHG. few bers, hoped :;w of the original members, who, with the assistance of new mcm- .mrs hoped to" carryon" theclub " till the boyscome home " when, it is'thought, the club would regain its original strength. With the help of those members who took advantage of the oiler of the Club in throwing open the range to anyone desirous of becoming jiroficient in the use of the rifle. A pleasant interlude was the iiresentation to .Airs. Stanley, wife of the Secretary, and -Mrs. Phillips, wife of the Assistant Secretary, of a lady's bag each, on behalf of the Club ; and to Air, H, AVatts, .Mr, H, Cha))lain, tiiid Master S, E, Phillijis a watch each for their assistance to the Club, Following this the As.sistant Secretary (iAlr, S, j, Pliillijis) made a presentation of .some beautiful china to Mrs. Dulf-Cole on behalf of the Club. After a hearty vote of thanks to the President the remainder of the musical programme was carried out. The Club Committee desire to tender their thanks to the S.M.R.C. for the splendid encouragement given to the Club, by kindly pre senting a " I.ife Membership " for Comjietition at the meeting, this in addition to a number of other splendid prizes. An opinion strongly expressed during the meeting was that there should be more of these jirizc meetings and the Committee throw out the suggestion to other Rifle Clubs that a gathering of marksmen under such circumstances is of the greatest value in keeping the mo\-e- ment at top pitch ; it is encouraging to the beginner, who linds a deal of satisfaction in shooting against others, outside his own club, and such meetings generally tend to produce what is most necessary, a nation of shots. S.M.R.C. Bullet Catcher specially designed to prevent bullet splashing and to capture practically all the shots fired. It has a ]" steel plate at the back of the targets which deflects the bullets into a trough containing sawdust placed underneath. The framing is of wood and both ends and bottom are lined with sheet iron so that it is impossible for any particle of the bullet to escape. The illustration shows the Catcher fitted with slots to take a loose target board for changing targets by hand. If a mechanical appliance is used for conveying the targets to and from the front of the Bullet Catcher, the target boards and slots would not be required. It is very compact and substantially constructed, so that it will withstand the hardest use, and the cost of constant repairs is avoided. It requires no fixing, being readily placed in the required position. The price of the Bullet Catcher complete with duplicate target boards for 4 targets as illustrated above, and which occupies a space of 8' long by 1' 6" deep, is £6 I3s. 4d. nett, delivered on rail in London. To this trajectory the following definitions are applicable :— departure and the axis of the ritle before firing (J, Figure NIL, in which a plus jump is indicated); The AnpJc of Descent is the angle made by the tangent to the trajectory at the point struck and the line of sight (Z); The Angle of Arrival is the angle made bv the tangent to the trajectory at the point struck and the horizontal plane (Y). We have already seen that the factors which govern the shape of the trajectory of the bullet are its muzzle velocity and its power of competing with the forces of gravity and the resistance of the air. The ballistic coefficient, C, has been termed a measurer of the ballistic efficiency of the bullet; it is a criterion of the bullet's power to overcome the resistance of the air. In Chapter \^nL the ballistic coefficient was expressed (Formula 18) as :— ■IV C = nkd- Ihe coefficient of reduction, n, is a factor depending principally upon the steadiness of flight of the bullet and the shape of head of the bullet. Its true value can be determined by experiment only. WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UKNext >
