T H E R I F L E M A N . 11 9 N O T E S A N D C O M M E N T S . We deeply regret to have to report the deatli in action of Captain T. D. Dntton, the well-known shot and member of the Lee Rifle Chib. Captain Button had been serving with his county regiment in the East for some months past ; he received an acting captaincy some six months ago. as a reward for sterling merit, and abont the middle of October was conlirmed in his rank and given a Com pany. His regiment took part in the Palestine lighting in connection with some very diflicnlt and dangerous operations, in the course of which Captain Button had his wrist shattered by a bullet ; on his way back to the dressing station he was caught by an enemy machine gun, aiul when it was possible for a rescue party to go out he was beyond aid. The brother ofticer who sent these details home states that the battalion mourns one of its most capable and best beloved ofiicers, as Captain Button was extremely popular with both ofiicers and men. ^ - H * - v r It will be remembered that Captain Button, shooting for the Lee Rille Club, took part in practically till the Society's open meetings during the ptist few yetirs, and won on different occasions the " Regiment," '• Baily Tele graph." •'Baily Express" and " Bnke of Westminster" challenge trophies. He also shot in the International matches on severtd occasions, tind lignred ]-)rominently in the prize lists of the Smidl Bore Meeting at Bisley in July, 1Q14, when he secured three lirst tind two second prizes in tiddition to some of ;i lower ctdegory. Miniature riflemen everywhere will, we are sure, join with us in our deep regret at his loss, and in onr expression of symixithy w i t h h i s I ' c k i t i v e s . * * * Wrni . reference to the articles by " Akeriman " now appearing in The Rielem.vx, we have received the follow ing particulars of a practice which has been carried out by one of onr clubs for more than three years. Ordinary empty cotton reels are placed on the quarry face forming the stop butt of the outdoor range ; the lirers do not see them placed in position, and proceed uir the range until the word •' halt " is given. They then face the target and commence by number to snapshoot irom the shoulder. On many occasions seven hits out of nine shots have been counted^ and this score has also been beaten at a range of approximately 50 yards. It will be seen the range may be anything between 25 and 100 yards, and has con sequently to be estimated and wind and light allowed for. To clubs possessing an outdoor range this practice can be fully recommended as a welcome change from ordinary target work, and it has the additional advantage that the targets are cheap and easily obtainable. * » * A V E R Y i n t e r e s t i n g p o s t m a t c h b e t w e e n t h e H a n l e y Y.M.C.A. and Castlemain (.Australia") Rifle Chibs has just been decided. In a letter to Mr. E. Cotton, Chairman of the North Staflordshire Rifle League, at the beginning of October, a former Fenton resident (Mr. R. Bettany), now of Victoria, Australia, suggested that the Castlem.ain and Hanley Teams should hold a shoot. The conditions laid down in Mr. Bettany's letter were : Bistance, 25 yards ; seven shots, two sighters (optional) per man ; teams. twelve members to shoot, ten best scores 10 count ; and that the respective targets, signed by the secretary, should be mailed at a certain time, so that they would be bound for their destination at the same time. This novel proposal commended itself to the local team, and they made the match. The scores are just to hand, the Hanley Team securing the verdict by a dozen points. Scores :— Hanley.—iMessrs. E. "it would be interesting if it were possible to arrange for a series of such matches between clubs in the United Kingdom ami those in .Australiti. * * * One of the tinest competition shoots which has been put up during the past ve.ar has been made within the last few days by the Humber Rifle Club when shooting their match in the Burroughes and Watts Competition. Humber were drawn agtiinst Ellengowan, and in the first place tied with their opponents, but on the re-shoot they made the e.xtraordinary score of 793 points out of a possible 800. The individual scores were as follows :— B. Whitten, 200; S. Wright, 198; G. H. Clay, 198; F.
