The only RELIABLE MACHINE for TESTING the STRIKING FORCE of Shot Guns, end for obtaining comparative results at any interval of time. The above machine is the invention of the Editor of The Field, and was first used in public at " Tlie Field Gun Tiiul," held at Wimbledon in J870, wliei-e it gave gi-eat satisfaction to the various competitors. It supplies a much needed want to Gun and Ammunition Makers and Sportsmen for a thoroughly reliable and comparative test of the striking foice of Shot Guns. It has been the custom of Guiimakers and others to test their Guns for penetration at Paper Pads, Card- boards. Tin Powder Canisters. Sheets of Tin, &c.. but all of these have been discoitled as being most unsatisfactory and unreliable, and not to be depended upon for the following reasons: Ist-Paper cannot always be obtained of the same quality, strength, &c.. and is very much iilfectcd by either damp or dry weather, and other cliinatical changes, 2nd—The above also applies to Cardboard. Srd—Tin Canisters or Sheets of Tin, even of one uniform gauge and weight, vary so much in tenacity and hardness, as to be but a veiy poor test. The force gauge, on the contrary, accurately registers the average force of all the pellets striking the lO-inch osciliating shot plate affixed to the nmchiuc, and not Uiar of two or three strong I'ellcts only, which is the case when Paper Pads, &c., are employed. It is made with a solid iron frame, and all the working parts are of steel, wliich are accurately fitted, and as free from friction as possible. The oscillating ID-inch steel shot plate is hung so as to have no lateral molion whatever ; therefore the shots that strike the side.s of the said plate register the sani^ as tliose in the centre. The main spring is fixed to a slee) rejjulating lever, with screw attachment, which enables the operator to re.adjust the machine (should it retiuire it) in a few minutes. The whole is enclosed with substantial ii-on doors, fastening with self-acting spring catches. Eaeli machine is sa))))lied with a complete set of te.sting liammers, .and all other necessary appendages for fixing and testing the same. With ordinary care the machine will last a life-time ; and, being so moderate in price, it. will soon repay itself in the saving of time, paper pads, Ac. At the same lime the owners will he in possession of a Itioroughly reliable inachine, which, for obtaining comparative results .at any interval of time, has no eijual Price, £17 10s. Od.
